Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College softball team is set to open up Northeast Conference (NEC) play with back-to-back home doubleheaders against LIU Brooklyn and Sacred Heart on Friday and Saturday.
The four-game set also marks the first four games on Grymes Hill for the Seahawks, who opened the season with tournaments in North Carolina and California.
The Green and White enters conference play with a 6-14 record, while the Blackbirds are 11-17 coming into the series, and the Pioneers are 15-11 on the year.
On Wednesday, Wagner earned a split against Drexel, that included a high-scoring, 13-11 victory in game two. Junior
Jessica Carlucci powered the Seahawks with two home runs and six RBIs, while junior
Karen Prihoda had three RBIs on three hits.
Last season, the Seahawks split against both LIU Brooklyn and Sacred Heart in the regular season. Against the Blackbirds, Brianna Tredway's RBI single with one out in the top of the seventh inning gave the Seahawks a 2-1 victory in game two.
Backed by a two-hit gem from former Seahawk pitcher McKaleigh Goodale, Wagner also earned a 1-0 victory over the Pioneers in the regular season.
During the postseason, the Seahawks were victorious against the Pioneers twice in two games, earning a 6-3 win in the first game of the NEC Tournament before advancing to the championship series with a 6-4 victory, as Tredway's three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth and a game-saving defensive play by sophomore
Alyssa Tucker paved the way for Wagner's championship series appearance.
Following this weekend's action, Wagner will travel to St. John's on Wednesday, April 4, with first pitch set for 2:30 PM.
