Newark, NJ - The Wagner men's cross country team took part in the 15th Annual NJIT Highlander XC Challenge at Branch Brook Park on Saturday morning, and captured first place honors.
Four Seahawk harriers placed among the top-ten in the NCAA D1 standings as reigning Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Week, Trausti Thorstein finished second, with a time of 25:29.00. This marks the fourth competition the freshman has placed among the top-three.
The Seahawks earned their way to the top finish by posting a total time of 2:10:03. The host Highlanders finished second with a total time of 2:11:39, followed by Fordham, who rounded out the top-three with a time of 2:13:50.
Junior
Jonathan Besselink, who finished second at last year's Highlander XC Challenge, turned in another top-three performance, placing third with a time of 25:40. Placing fifth overall, was fellow classmate
Nick Velez, who clocked in a time of 26:07.
Senior
Matthew Whalen turned in a top-10 time of 26:13.00, earning him seventh overall, while junior Robert Guidicipitero placed 14
th with a time of 26:34.00
Freshman
William Cuthbertson,
Christopher Hernandez, and
Sean Weir finished 15
th, 17
th, and 21
st respectively.
The Seahawks will return to action on October 19, when they will travel to Colts Neck, NJ to compete in the Monmouth Tune up, in preparation for the Northeast Conference Championships.
