Princeton, NJ - The Wagner men's tennis team, under first-year head coach
Shem Filipek, commences its spring season on Sunday afternoon as they travel to Princeton, NJ to take on Ivy League members, the Princeton University Tigers.
The Seahawks had an impressive fall campaign, highlighted by taking home several individual titles at the
Villanova University and
Hofstra University Invitational and dual match wins over Rider, Hofstra and Siena.
Back on November 17, the program learned that senior
Charlton Boyd was ranked No.
104 out of 125 Division I men's tennis players by the Oracle/International Tennis Association (ITA). In earning the recognition, Boyd became just the second Seahawk in the program's history to be ranked by the ITA, joining fellow teammate, sophomore
Hans Ohrner, who was recognized by the ITA with a ranking of 115 back on January 4, 2017.
Boyd is the program's current all-time leader in career singles wins (59) and doubles victories (60) since the NEC has kept statistical records dating back to 2005-06. The Shreveport, LA native is a team-best 11-2 this year and went 8-2 in tournament matches. Additionally, he went a perfect 10-0 in doubles play alongside fellow classmate,
Allen Wang.
Boyd was also named NEC Player of the Month back on October 31.
Junior
Eric Poland ranks second on the team with a 10-4 singles record this season while joining Boyd and Ohrner for the team lead in tournament wins with eight. Ohrner and sophomore
Dylan Walters each have nine singles victories on the season while second-year Seahawk
Siddharth Anand and junior
Anatoliy Lashkul each have contributed eight wins.
In all, the 2017-18 men's tennis squad has recorded a combined 75-47 overall record (.615 winning percentage) while going 13-2 in dual matches (.867 winning percentage) and is 62-45 in tournament play this year.
Princeton will open dual match play earlier in the morning against Big Ten members, Michigan State, before squaring off against the Seahawks. Last season, the Tigers finished 14-12 overall and 4-3 in the Ivy League to place fourth at season's end.
Kabir Sarita and Jimmy Wasserman lead the Tigers with eight wins this season while the combination of Noah Agarwal and Wasserman are a perfect 4-0 in doubles. Additionally, Agarwal and Eduardo Paz have also posted four wins in doubles play.
Following the match at Princeton, the Seahawks will have almost two full weeks to prepare for a February 9 road contest at Big East members, St. John's.
