Hempstead, NY - The Wagner men's tennis team concluded its second in-season tournament of the year at the Hofstra University Invitational. At the end of the two-day tournament, the Seahawks are returning to Grymes Hill with a total of four championship titles.
Sophomore
Hans Ohrner (Margate, FL/Coral Springs Christian Academy) secured the Hofstra University Invitational "B" Singles championship. Senior
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) and classmate
Allen Wang (Clovis, CA/Buchanan) claimed the Hofstra University Invitational "B" Doubles championship for the Seahawks second title of the event. Individually, Boyd took home the Hofstra University Invitational C title while Wang was crowned champion of the "C" consolation bracket.
"A" Bracket:
The Seahawks had four members representing the program in the "A" bracket, juniors
Dale Sandy (Durban, South Africa/Kersney College Secondary School),
Anatoliy Lashkul (Kiev, Ukraine/High School #78),
Eric Poland (Fort Meyers, FL/Bishop Verot) and sophomore
Dylan Walters (Johannesburg, South Africa/St. Stithians Boys' College).
In the Round of 16, Lashkul, Poland, and Walters all advanced with Lashkul defeating Fairleigh Dickinson's, Adam Chan, 6-2; 6-3; Poland bested FDU's Youssef Sader, 7-5; 6-0, while Walters earned a 6-1; 6-3 victory over Hofstra's Marcus Smith. Lashkul and Walters each earned quarterfinal victories, as Lashkul defeated Hofstra's Niko Vulinovich (8-3) while Walters picked up an 8-2 win over FDU's Andris Gudins.
Both Seahawks were bested in the semifinals as Lashkul fell to FDU's Moric Budinszky (9-7) while Walters fell to eventual "A" champion, Hofstra's Jan Leithner, 8-2.
In doubles action, Lashkul and Sandy reached the quarterfinals after beating the St. Francis Brooklyn pairing of Alejandro Ridruejo/Guillermo Artiz, 6-0.
"A" Consolation:
In the "A" consolation bracket, Sandy reached the finals after defeating Saint Peter's University, Piotr Sowinski (8-5) in the quarterfinals, and Chan in the semifinals. Sandy put forth a valiant performance in the finals despite falling to Hofstra's Marcus Smith, 8-6.
In doubles action, junior
Ilya Kneppelhout (Woubrugge, Netherlands/Scala College Secondary School) was paired with Ohrner as they reached the championship round after defeating Zach Lasky/Marco Ammirati of SUNY Oneonta in the quarterfinals (6-1) and Joseph Kavaloski/Steven Duka of Fordham in the semis via walkover
The Seahawk pairing fell to St. Francis Brooklyn's Alejandro Ridruejo/Gullimero Artiz, 7-6 (6).
"B" Bracket:
Ohrner, Kneppelhout and sophomore
Siddharth Anand (New Delhi, India/Modern School Barakhamba Road) participated in the "B" Draw bracket of the Hofstra Invitational. Ohrner and Anand were each victorious in the Round of 16 as Ohrner defeated SUNT Oneonta's Nicholas Fox, 6-0; 7-5 while Anand bested Saint Peter's Igor Khvorostian, 7-6 (3), 6-2.
The second-year Seahawk Ohrner advanced to the championship round after he picked up wins over Niclas Pietsch of FDU (8-6) and Lutwin de Macar of Fordham (8-4). In a back-and-forth championship match, Ohrner was able to claim the "B" championship, outlasting Hofstra's Corentin Haener, 9-8 (4).
In the doubles portion of the bracket, Boyd/Wang along with Walters/Poland each got past the Round of 16 as Boyd/Wang defeated the Saint Peter's duo of Ivan Knezevic/Doug Nover (6-3) while Walters/Poland defeated SUNY Oneonta's Ben Cohen/Riley Smith, 6-0. Boyd/Wang moved on to finals with wins over Justin Sinprasith/Ignacio Tintore (Saint Peter's), 6-4, in the quarterfinals and Stefan Gmijovic/Pablo Blasco-Torres (St. Francis Brooklyn), 6-1, in the semifinals.
In the finals, it was Wagner against Hofstra once again with Boyd/Wang edging David Schrott/Nick Silvestri, 6-4, to claim Wagner's second title of the invitational.
"B" Consolation:
Kneppelhout was the lone member of the "B" consolation bracket, as the third-year Seahawk reached the championship match of the bracket but was defeated by Javier Navarro of St. Francis Brooklyn, 8-5.
"C" Bracket:
Boyd, Wang, and newcomer
Patricio Hernandez-Pons (Miami, FL/Es International School) were all selected to participate in the "C" Draw. Hernandez-Pons defeated Cameron Posillico (Fordham) in the Round of 16, 6-1; 6-1 while Boyd outlasted Knezevic, 6-1; 7-6 (5).
Boyd advanced to the title match after getting past Cole Laffitte (SUNY Oneonta), 8-1 and Santiago Haas (Hofstra), 8-6. Hernandez-Pons was defeated in the quarterfinals by Haas, 8-3. In the finale, it was the Seahawks and Pride showdown for the third time with Boyd securing Wagner's third title of the invitational, besting David Schrott, 8-4.
"C" Consolation:
For the second straight year, Wang earned a singles title at the Hofstra University Invitational. Following last season's "D" singles crown, Wang was earned an 8-1 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn's Stefan Gmijovic in the quarters while besting Gabriel Russotto (Saint Peter's), 8-2 in the semis.
In the finale, Wang got past his second straight opponent from Saint Peter's, defeating Knezevic, 8-5, for the Green & White's fourth title, surpassing last season's total (3).
Wagner will next be in action on October 7 and October 8 for the two-day Army West Point Invitational.
