VESTAL, N.Y. — Wagner men's tennis finished the NEC Individuals on Sunday by claiming both the singles and doubles championships in Flight A. The Seahawks were set to represent the NEC at the ITA Masters Championships in both singles and doubles before the matches were even played, since the finalists from each match were Wagner athletes.
In the doubles championship, junior
Eddie Schmidt and sophomore
Nicola Bottelberghs defeated junior
Lukas Escher and senior
Tyler Nguyen in three sets. After an easy 6-1 set win for Schmidt and Bottelberghs, the two Seahawk pairs battled through a second set which needed an extra game to decide. Esher and Nguyen took the second set 7-5, but Schmidt and Bottelberghs took the final set and the doubles crown 6-1, 5-7, 10-8.
Escher would get one back later that day, when he faced off against Schmidt again in the singles championship. This match went more quickly for the Essen, Germany native this time around, as he defeated his teammate in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Despite losing the match, Schmidt – along with Bottelberghs and Escher – earned spots at the ITA Masters Championships in November.
Additionally, junior
Joshua Zhao competed in the Flight C singles title game and defeated Le Moyne's Luke Hoyland 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 to secure the title.
The Seahawks will return to the court when they travel to Monmouth to take on the Hawks on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
