Staten Island, NY - After a nearly two-week layoff away from the pitch, the unbeaten Wagner women's soccer team (2-0-1) returns to Hameline Field on Sunday, September 3 when the Seahawks welcome the IUPUI Jaguars (1-3-0) of the Horizon League in a Noon start.
Last Time Out: First-half goals by sophomores
Maria Nunez (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) and
Christine Letendre (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) proved to be all the offense the Seahawks would need in claiming a 2-1 road victory at Rider back on August 23.
After a promising opportunity by freshman
Mya Donnelly (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) 20 minutes into the contest was saved by Amy Kozlowski in goal for the Broncs, Nunez was in position to alertly knock in the rebound, giving Wagner a 1-0 lead. The Green & White then scored what would prove to be the game-winner as a long ball down the middle by junior
Sandra Battista (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) slipped past Kozlowski and right to Letendre, who gave the Seahawks a 2-1 lead from short distance.
Hot Start: Wagner is off to an impressive start, sporting a 2-0-1 record, which marks the Seahawks' best start to a season since 2014 when the Green & White started out 3-1. Wagner has not been unbeaten through three games since 2013, when the the Seahawks started out with four straight victories.
Newcomer Noise: Throughout the first three games, first-year head
Phil Casella has relied heavily on the Seahawk newcomers, who are making an immediate impact on the squad. On average, Casella has used five freshmen in his starting lineup in the first three contests. Additionally, the newcomers have scored two of the five team goals this season while adding two assists in the process.
Prime Performer: After her game-winning goal in the 112th minute of Wagner's contest against Delaware State, sophomore
