Smithfield, RI – For the fourth straight season, Wagner and Bryant will meet in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship game, with this year's title tilt set for Sunday at 1:00 p.m., and the winner gaining automatic entry into the
2017 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship.
After falling to the Bulldogs in the 2014 and 2015 NEC Title games, the Seahawks, under then first-year head coach
Katie Rowan and led by a 10-person senior class, broke through last season,
claiming the program's first-ever NCAA bid with an 11-7 victory behind Tournament MVP Tori McGrath. In the 2017 regular season meeting between the teams on April 30, the Bulldogs posted a 16-6 win.
While the NCAA Championship was new territory for Wagner in 2016, it marked the 10th consecutive season that Rowan has been a part of the NCAA's as either a player or coach. She previously made the NCAA's three times during an All-American playing career at Syracuse, and has now reached seven NCAA's as a coach - four as an assistant at Syracuse, two as an assistant at Albany, and now one in her at Wagner.
"Wagner and Bryant have really developed into a tremendous rivalry and it's been fun to be a part it these last two years," said Rowan. "Bryant's a terrific team. I felt like when we played them last week, we had one stretch there where they went on a run and kind of put the game away. Both teams are going to come out ready to play so it should be a great game."
