NEC Release
Smithfield, RI – At the annual banquet held on the eve of the Northeast Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament (NEC) on Thursday night, the league revealed its 2017 All-NEC Teams, which included four Seahawks.
Junior attacker
Heidi Colford (Eden Prarie, MN / Eden Praire) and senior defender
Amanda Rey (Turnersville, NJ / Washington Township) were named to the All-NEC First Team. Junior midfielder
Lauren Ednie (Verona, NJ / Verona) and sophomore attacker
Anna Belle Reilly (Paradise Valley, AZ / Notre Dame Prep) were tabbed to the All-NEC Second Team.
"We are proud of these four ladies, as well as the whole team for their efforts and contributions this season," said Wagner second-year head coach
Katie Rowan. "We are looking forward to the tournament to start," Rowan stated, who, in her first season, guided the Seahawks to the 2016 NEC crown and appearing in the NCAA Championship Play-In game.
Wagner's title defense begins on Friday at 4:00 p.m. as the third-seeded Green & White meet second-seeded Robert Morris in the second semifinal of the day. Bryant, the regular season league champions, and top seed will meet fourth-seeded Sacred Heart in Friday's first game at 1:00 p.m.
The winners of Friday's semifinal matchups will square off for the 2017 NEC Championship on Sunday, May 6 in a 1:00 p.m. start.
Colford enjoyed a breakout season as a junior, leading the Seahawks in points with 62, with 30 goals (fourth on the team) and a team-leading 32 assists. Those 32 helpers rank No. 2 on the Wagner all-time single-season list, just three behind the Jessica Mills, who dished out a school-record 35 assists in 2013.
For the season, the hard-shooting lefthander ranked No. 1 among all NEC players in league games with an average of 2.86 assists per game. On March 16, the 6'0" Colford distributed a career-high six assists at Stetson and handed out five assists on April 28 at Central Connecticut.
Colford buried a career-high four goals on April 21 vs. Sacred Heart, one of nine multiple goal-scoring games she's had in 2017.
For Rey, this year's First-Team honor is the first of her career and the third straight postseason league award that she has attained after being named to the All-NEC Second Team each of the last two seasons. This season, Rey is the team leader in groundballs (52), draw controls (43) and caused turnovers (30) with those 30 CT's ranking seventh on the Wagner all-time single-season list.
On April 28 at Central, Rey collected a career-high eight draw controls and enters this weekend's NEC Tournament ranked fifth on the all-time Seahawk career list with 126 DC's to her credit.
Ednie, another versatile player who fills up several statistical columns, deposited a career-high five goals vs. Sacred Heart on April 21. For the year, she has scored at least one goal in 12 of the Seahawks' 15 games this season.
Like Colford, Reilly enjoyed a breakout season in 2017, finishing second on the team in points with 53, while amassing 37 goals (second on the team) and 16 assists (third on the team). Reilly hit the ground running in 2017, notching a then career-high four goals in the February 15 season opener vs. Iona.
The sharp-shooting sophomore recently bettered that mark when she went for five goals at Central Connecticut on April 28. For the year, Reilly tallied three or more goals on seven different occasions.
