Seahawks Top Bryant, 7-1; Sabido With Career-High Four Hits In Victory

Staten Island, NY - Freshman DH Freddy Sabido (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner [Saint Louis Univ] accounted for half of Wagner's hits as the Seahawks defeated the defending Northeast Conference (NEC) champions, the Bryant University Bulldogs, 7-1, on Friday afternoon.
 
With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 6-14; 2-2 in league contests while the Bulldogs fall to 7-18; 2-1 in NEC play.
 
Wagner's senior RHP Austin Goeke (Bordentown, NJ/The Hun School) threw six strong innings, allowing just two hits, an earned run while walking two and striking out five en route his second win of the season (2-1). Sophomore reliever Douglas Molnar (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North recorded his first save of the season and second of his career, tossing three scoreless innings while allowing a hit and striking out a batter.
 
Sabido had a career-high four hits in five at-bats while swiping two bases to propel the Green & White offense. Sophomore 3B Anthony Pecora (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) went 1-for-3 with two RBIs while junior LF Anthony Godino (Thornwood, NY/Pleasantville) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Sophomore catcher Phil Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) also was credited with a RBI.
 
After a scoreless first, in which Goeke struck out the first two Bulldog batters, the Seahawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Sabido laced a single to left and moved into scoring position on his first steal of the contest. Senior 1B Brad Currao (Howell, NJ/St. Rose) reached on an error by the second baseman which allowed Sabido to score.
 
A bunt single from freshman RF John Mead (Washington Township, NJ/Bergen Catholic) moved Currao to second and the senior first baseman advanced to third on a throwing error by the Bryant third baseman. After Mead had stolen second, Pecora ripped a 2-2 pitch from the Bulldogs' starter Chris Wright, into right center field, plating both Mead and Currao.
 
The Bulldogs scored its only run of the contest in the top of the third as Malik Daley sent a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Jacob Marotta, who led off the frame with a double down the left field line.
 
Following a scoreless fourth, Wagner tacked on another run in the fifth in taking a 4-1 lead. With two-outs, Godino rocketed a hard-hit ball to the deepest part of left-center as he wound up on third and came into score on a wild pitch,  ending Wright's day on the mound.
 
The Seahawks added two more in the bottom of the seventh. Junior SS Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) reached on an error by the Bulldogs second baseman and moved to third when Godino singled to left center field. Bryant's relief pitcher, Jack Patterson, threw a wild pitch, that brought in Mazzio and moved Godino to third. Capra lofted a flyball to right field which scored Godino as Wagner took a five-run lead at 6-1.
 
The Seahawks' final run of the contest came in the bottom of the eight as with the bases loaded, Godino flew out to right, which scored junior 2B Kyle Brey (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) from third.
 
Molnar threw a perfect ninth in securing his second career save, getting Mickey Gasper to fly out the centre field, Chris Wright to pop up to second and Jimmy Titus to fly out to right.
 
Bryant's Christ Wright was tabbed with the loss, running his record to 0-4 on the season after he lasted 4.2 innings, allowing six hits, four runs (three earned) while issuing three walks and striking out four. Tyler Panno, Marotta, and Gaby Cruz were the only Bryant players with a hit this afternoon.
 
The two teams resume their series with a doubleheader set for 1:00 p.m. tomorrow, as they will play two, seven-inning games.
