Staten Island, NY - Despite staging a late rally, the Wagner College baseball team couldn't complete the comeback, falling in the nightcap of Saturday's Northeast Conference (NEC) contest, 5-4, to the Bryant University Bulldogs.

The Seahawks fall to 6-16 on the season and 2-4 in league play while the Bulldogs improve to 9-18 and 4-1 in conference tilts.

Freshman DH Freddy Sabido (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner [Saint Louis University]) produced both runs for the Green & White while going 1-for-3. Junior SS Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) had two hits for the home team. Sophomore catcher Phil Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) also had hit in the contest for Wagner.

Freshman starter Chris Mormile (Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood) lasted two innings in suffering his third defeat of the season (1-3) after allowing five earned runs while walking two and striking out two.

Senior reliever Eric McGough (Media, PA/Archbishop John Carroll) came on for Mormile, throwing two scoreless innings while also striking out two batters. Freshman Steven Bowley (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross Academy) lasted three innings while not allowing a run and recording two punchouts.

The Seahawks took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Junior RF Kyle Cala (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) reached on an error to open the contest and moved into scoring position after Mazzio singled through the right side. Capra grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, which allowed Cala to score the game's first run.

Bryant evened the game at 1-1 in its half of the second. With one out, Jimmy Titus and Tyler Panno delivered back-to-back singles before Jacob Marotta drew a six-pitch walk. The next batter, Gaby Cruz, lofted a sacrifice fly to right field, which brought in Titus.

The Bulldogs weren't done as they tacked on four more in the top of the third to take a 5-1 lead. Mickey Gasper doubled down the right field line, plating Cole Fabio and Nick Angelini. Chris Wright, Friday's starting pitcher, singled through the right side which scored Gasper. Cruz delivered his second RBI of the day with another sac-fly, this time to center field, bringing in Wright.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Seahawks had two outs with Sabido stepping to the plate. On a 1-2 pitch from Bryant starter, Steve Theetge, Sabido belted a solo shot over the 318 sign in right field, which trimmed the Bulldogs lead to three, 5-2.

Following a scoreless fifth, the Seahawks mounted a comeback in their half of the sixth. Mazzio singled to center, and junior LF Anthony Godino (Thornwood, NY/Pleasantville) walked on five pitches. Capra took Theetge's 1-0 delivery to right center, scoring Mazzio from second, as Wagner trailed 5-3. Sabido reached on fielder's choice when Capra was out at second as Godino came in to bring the deficit to one, 5-4.

The Seahawks, however, couldn't get a runner on in the last of the seventh, as a ground out by pinch-hitter Will Johnson (Toms River, NJ/Toms River High School East) ended the game.

Wagner and Bryant conclude their series from Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George on Sunday, April 9, with a single, nine-inning contest. First-pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
