Brooklyn, NY - In the Northeast Conference (NEC) opener for both teams, the Wagner College baseball team and the Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights battled for five hours and two minutes and a total of 12 innings to decide a winner.  Today's contest was played at MCU Park in Coney Island, the home of the Brooklyn Cyclones, the New York-Penn League affiliate of the New York Mets. In the end, the Knights were able to score twice in the top of the 12th as the Seahawks dropped a 7-5 decision in game one of Friday's doubleheader.  With the loss, the Seahawks fell to 2-11 while FDU improved to 3-9 on the year.

Six Seahawks had multi-hit performances in the twin bill opener, led by junior SS Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) and freshman DH Freddy Sabido (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner [Saint Louis Univ.]) each had three hits while Mazzio drove in two RBIs. Junior RF Kyle Cala (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial), sophomore 1B Phil Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) and senior catcher Brendan Benecke (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) each drove in a RBI.

Senior RHP Austin Goeke (Bordentown, NJ/The Hun School) went 4.2 innings, giving up four hits, four runs (three earned) while walking a season-high six and striking out six for the fifth straight time this season. Sophomore reliever Douglas Molnar (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) threw four scoreless innings, squandering six hits while not walking a batter and striking out four. Freshman Ryan Lauk (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) took the loss on the afternoon, after lasting just 2.2 innings while giving up two runs (one earned) while walking one and striking out a batter. The go-ahead in the top of the 12th was his responsibility when fellow classmate Nick Robino (Wilmington, DE/Salesianum School) came on for him.

Each team scored in their half of the second. For FDU, Ryan Brennan homered to left center field while in the bottom of the frame Mazzio kicked off the frame with a double to right-center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Benecke saw seven pitches in his at-bat and was able to loft a sacrifice fly to center which plated Mazzio. The Seahawks tacked on two more in the in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Sabido led off the frame with a triple to left field and came in to score on a Capra RBI single to right center field. With runners on first and second, Mazzio connected on a base-hit, scoring junior LF Anthony Godino (Thornwood, NY/Pleasantville).

The Knights went ahead, 4-3, after scoring two in the top of the fourth and one in the fifth. The Green & White evened the score at 4-4 in the bottom half of the eighth. Mazzio singled to center and moved into scoring position after Benecke grounded out to first. Down to its last out in the stanza, Cala laced a single to right field which scored Mazzio. After a scoreless ninth and tenth, both teams, like in the second inning, scored a run. In the top of the 11th, Matt McCann reached on an error and promptly stole second. Brandon Seltzer singled up the middle, scoring McCann to give FDU a 5-4 lead.

The resilient Seahawks knotted the contest at 5-5. Sabido led off by beating out an infield single to second. Godino reached on a fielder's choice, but Sabido was thrown out trying to score. A walk to sophomore OF Joe Silvestrone (Manalapan, NJ/Freehold Township), Mazzio drew a six-pitch walk that tied the ballgame. In the top of the 12th, Jorge Iza singled through the left side and moved to second on a stolen base. Owen Vonesslinger singled to short, scoring what would be the game-winning run in Iza. With the bases full, Seltzer drew a walk to add an insurance run.

Wagner had a chance in the bottom of the frame. Junior 2B Kyle Brey (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) walked. Sabido singled to the right, giving the Green & White runners on first and second. Both moved up ninety feet on a wild pitch but couldn't come around to score as a strikeout, and a flyout to the left ended the game.
