Washington, D.C. - The Wagner College baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader, defeating the Holy Cross Crusaders 6-2, at St. Albans School, after dropping game one by a count of 3-2.
With the win, the Seahawks snapped a nine-game losing streak as the Green & White now stand at 2-10 while the Crusaders fall to 3-11 on the season.
Senior co-captain
Danny Marsh (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township) earned his second win of the season (2-0) as he tossed six innings in which he gave up three runs (two earned) over three hits while walking two and striking out five. Freshman
Chris Mormile (Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood) came on in relief, throwing three scoreless innings, giving up a hit, a walk and striking out two.
Junior SS
Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Five Seahawks had a hit in the nightcap of today's twinbill, as sophomore 1B
Phil Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Freshman RF
John Mead (Washington Twp, NJ/Bergen Catholic) also scored a run with one RBI.
Holy Cross scored first in the opening frame as Anthony Critelli singled to right center field scoring Austin Masel. The Crusaders tacked on their final run of the afternoon in the top of the third as Masel sent a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Alex Voitik.
Wagner scored its first run in the bottom of the third. After Mazzio singled to left center, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, Mead sent an RBI grounder to short, scoring Mazzio to make it a 2-1 game.
After a scoreless top half of the fourth, the Seahawks took their first lead of the game, 3-2. Sophomore catcher
James Wise (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Capra ripped a double down the right field line to tie the score at 2-2.
Junior LF
Anthony Godino (Thornwood, NY/Pleasantville) reached on an error by the Holy Cross shortstop and promptly stole second, giving Wagner runners on second and third with two outs. Mazzio stepped into the batter's box and delivered a single through the left side, scoring Capra, but Godino was thrown out trying to score.
The Green & White added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh in securing the 6-2 victory. Godino led off with a single and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Joe Silvestrone (Manalapan, NJ/Freehold Township). Godino swiped third before Mazzio drew a walk. Godino plated Wagner's fourth run of the game with a steal of home.
Mead doubled the down the right field line and was brought in on a RBI single off the bat of junior
Kyle Brey (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South), giving the Seahawks a 5-2 advantage. Brey advanced to third on an error by the Crusaders' Pat McGowan and scored on the team's second steal of home.
The Seahawks are scheduled to take on the Monmouth University Hawks in West Long Branch, NJ on March 22. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
