Orem, UT – After garnering its first win of the 2017 season over Southern Utah, the Wagner College softball team continues its road trip to Utah with back-to-back doubleheaders against Utah Valley on Wednesday and BYU on Thursday.
First Win: Five different Seahawks collected RBIs while junior pitcher
Morgan Brown (Buckeye, AZ / Verrado) limited the opposition to three runs as the Green & White picked up their first victory of the season On Sunday, defeating Southern Utah 5-3.
Brianna Tredway (Downingtown, PA / Downingtown West) got Wagner off to a fast start with a base hit in the first, while freshman
Kaila Smith (Millville, NJ / Millville) picked up her team-leading sixth RBI of the season in the third with a single down the left field line. Freshman
Zoe Bender's (Glen Rock, NJ / Glen Rock) fielder's choice in the fourth and
Alyssa Tucker's (Laguna Niguel, CA / Santa Margarita Catholic) RBI groundout in the fifth gave Wagner the 5-1 victory.
Goodale Makes History: Senior pitcher
McKaleigh Goodale (Bradenton, FL / Lakewood Ranch) became Wagner's all-time saves leader in Wagner's victory, as the Bradenton, FL native shut the door for the seventh time in her career to move past former Wagner greats Morgan Miller and Krystle Petty on the all-time saves list. The senior has six appearances on the year and is tied for the team lead with eight strikeouts on the season.
Prihoda Leads The Way: After an outstanding rookie campaign, sophomore
Karen Prihoda (Hamilton Square, NJ / The Lawrenceville School) is continuing where she left off. The sophomore leads Wagner in runs scored (6), hits (13), total bases (16) and stolen bases (3), while being tied for second in RBIs (4) and fourth in batting average (.361).
Milestone Watch: Senior
Brianna Tredway hit her 30
th career double in Wagner's loss to Utah State on March 10. The fourth-year Seahawk needs nine more doubles to tie Victoria Bastistelli for fifth on the all-time list. Former Wagner great Andrea Lazzari currently leads the category with 50 doubles throughout her career.
Freshman Power: All three Wagner home runs on the season have been hit by first-year student-athletes. Staten Island native
Christina Harkins (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) was the first Seahawk to hit the ball out of the park on March 4 against Elon, while classmate
Kaila Smith connected for two homers in Wagner's doubleheader on March 10, against Utah State and Southern Utah.
Offensive Improvement: After averaging 1.4 runs per contest during the Elon Tournament to start the season, Wagner's offense has significantly improved over the course of the last five games, all of which were played in Utah. The Seahawks averaged 3.8 runs per game throughout the Utah State Tournament, an increase of 2.4 runs compared to the first five games of the season.
Fast Starts: Wagner has scored in the first inning in four of eleven games this season, including three out of their last five games. Leadoff hitter
Karen Prihoda, one of two Seahawks to start in every game, leads the Green and White with 13 hits and six runs scored on the season, serving as the catalyst for the early offensive success.
Scouting Utah Valley: The Wolverines enter the series with a 4-9 record, with all victories coming in their last five games. Before facing off against the Seahawks, the Wolverines play host to Maine today, before continuing their season at Wagner's previous opponent, Utah State. On the season, the Wolverines have slugged 23 home runs in 13 games and are led by Brittney Vansway's 23 RBIs and 5 homers.
Scouting BYU: The Cougars come into this week with a 14-7 record, which includes wins over #13 Washington and #11/12 Georgia. Six players on the Cougars' roster have batted in ten or more runs on the season, with Libby Sugg leading the way with 24. In the circle, McKenna Bull is first on the team with eight complete games and a 10-2 record, having struck out 72 batters on the season. The Seahawks are 0-1 all-time against BYU. The only meeting between the two teams came in 2010, when Wagner lost its season opener as part of the Tennessee Classic to the Cougars, 10-0 in five innings. The Seahawks are 0-2 all-time against current members of the West Coast Conference.
Up next for Wagner: The Seahawks return from Utah to open up their home slate with doubleheaders against Manhattan and Fairfield on March 22 and 23. The Green and White open Northeast Conference (NEC) play when they host Central Connecticut on April 1.
