Newark, DE - After several changes to Friday's schedule and play being suspended until this afternoon, the Wagner baseball team fell to the University of Delaware Blue Hens, 15-7. With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 1-8 on the season while Delaware now stands at 7-6.

Junior RF Kyle Cala (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) went 3-for-5, which included his first home run of the 2017 season and the fourth of his career while driving in two RBIs. Classmate Anthony Godino (Thornwood, NY/Pleasantville) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Five other Green & White batters had hits en route to 11 total hits. Junior SS Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School), freshman Freddy Sabido (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner [Saint Louis University]) and sophomore James Wise (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) each had a RBI in the contest.

Wagner's starter, senior RHP Austin Goeke (Bordentown, NJ/The Hun School) lasted three innings, allowing a season-high five earned runs while scattering four hits, walking four and striking out five batters in taking his first loss of the season. Sophomore LHP Neil Abbatiello (North Salem, NY/Dobbs Ferry) came on in relief of Goeke, tossing three innings, allowing six hits, four earned runs, a walk, and a season-best five strikeouts.

Cala led off the game with his first home run of the season, a solo shot that sailed over the right field wall.  In the bottom half of the inning, Kevin Mohollen led off the stanza for the home team with a double to center field. After advancing on a Nick Tierno grounder, Doug Trimble took the first pitch from Goeke over the right-center field wall, giving the Blue Hens a 2-1 advantage. The round tripper was the first earned runs allowed of the season from the 2016 All-NEC Second Teamer.

After a scoreless inning and a half, the Blue Hens drove in three runs on two hits to take a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the third. Goeke was able to retire the first two batters, getting Tierno to fly out to right field and striking out Jordan Glover. Trimble took a 0-1 pitch to left field for a double. Goeke issued back-to-back walks which loaded the bases for Calvin Scott. Facing a full count, the Blue Hens right fielder cleared the bases with a single to left center field.

In the top of the fifth, the Seahawks were able to create an opportunity.  With one-out, senior backstop Brendan Benecke (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) ripped a double down the left field line. Freshman 3B Nick D'Amore (Philadelphia, PA / Neumann-Goretti) worked a four-pitch walk, giving the visitors runners at first and second with one out. UD's starter, Brandon Walter, was able to get out of potential trouble with a strikeout of Cala and inducing an inning-ending grounder to the third baseman.

Delaware scored four times in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 9-1 lead. Two straight singles from Trimble and Nick Patten jumped started the inning as Jeremy Ake tripled to right field on the first pitch he saw from Abbatiello, bringing in both Trimble and Patten. Scott followed with a double down the right field line which plated Ake. The final tally came off the bat of Mohollen who scored Scott with a single to left as the Blue Hens went up by eight.

Wagner scored a run in the top of the seventh, cutting the deficit to 9-2. With two outs, the visitors got a pair of singles from D'Amore and Cala. D'Amore was able to race around the bases and make it safely to third on Cala's second hit of the afternoon. Junior SS Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) sent an infield single to second, scoring D'Amore.

In the bottom of the inning, the Blue Hens added a run after sophomore Douglas Molnar (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) hit the first two batters he faced in relief of Abbatiello. UD's Brian Mayer doubled to right center which scored Scott that increased the Delaware lead to 10-2.

The Green & White trimmed the Blue Hens lead to 10-4 in the top of the eighth. Benecke sent a single to center, scoring Godino. D'Amore reached on a fielding error by the UD's third baseman, giving Wagner runners on first and second. The hot-hitting Cala swatted his third hit of the day, connecting on a single to center, bringing home Benecke that cut the Delaware lead to six. Delaware added five more in the bottom of the eighth in taking a 15-4 lead.

The Seahawks tallied three runs in the top of the ninth. Pecora was hit by a pitch while newcomer Eric Lauk (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) drew a walk. Pecora was able to score on an error by the catcher. The next batter, Godino, tripled to center field which plated Lauk. Sabido delivered a RBI grounder for the Seahawks final run of the contest.
