Newark, DE - The Wagner College baseball team dropped the final game of its three-game set against the University of Delaware, falling 19-6 on Sunday afternoon.
Junior CF
Kyle Cala (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial), sophomore 3B
Anthony Pecora (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) and junior 2B
Kyle Brey (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) each went 2-for-4 and drove in five of the six runs.
Freshman RHP
Chris Mormile (Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood) fell to 0-2 on the season after throwing two innings, surrendering eight runs, none of which were earned while walking five and striking out two.
Delaware erupted for eight runs in the opening inning, all of which coming with two outs. Nick Patten reached on an error, scoring Kevin Mohollen for the game's first run. Jeremy Ake followed with a single. James Meeker drove in two with a single to center before Mohollen smashed a three-run shot over the right field wall.
Wagner was able to get one back in the top of the second as Brey doubled down the right field line, bringing junior LF
Anthony Godino (Thornwood, NY/Pleasantville) around to score.
In the bottom of the third, the Blue Hens added six more runs, upping their lead to 14-1. Ake drove in three of the six runs on a double to right-center field.
Cala continued his hot stretch as he connected on his second home run of the season and fifth of his career. With Brey on first after an infield single, Cala crushed the first pitch he saw from Milley over the right field wall. The Blue Hens tacked on two more in the bottom of the frame as Diaz Nardo drove in Patten and Austin Niggebrugge on the double to right center in upping their lead to 16-3.
The Seahawks kicked off the top of the fifth as Pecora tripled to center field on the second pitch he saw during the at-bat. Godino was plunked by a Burk FitzPatrick pitch, giving Wagner runners on the corners before Godino took second on a wild pitch. Junior SS
Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) brought in Pecora on a RBI grounder to short. Wagner scored its second run when Brey reached on an error by the Blue Hens second baseman, plating Godino.
Delaware scored three times in the bottom of the fifth off a pair of singles. Pecora singled to right center in the top of the sixth for the final run of the contest as the game concluded due to mercy rule after seven inning.
Wagner is scheduled to host the UMass Lowell River Hawks on Wednesday, March 15.
