Staten Island, NY – Junior guard
Corey Henson (Upper Marlboro, MD / DeMatha Catholic) tossed in 15 points, senior guard
Michael Carey (Nassau, Bahamas / Lamar Consolidated / San Jacinto College) added 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds while junior guard
JoJo Cooper (Wilmington, DE / Concord) chipped in with 14 points to lead Wagner to a 69-66 victory over Bryant, which clinches a home game in the first round of the Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament on March 1.
The Seahawks, who have now won seven of their last eight games, improve to 15-12 overall and 11-6 in the NEC while the Bulldogs fall to 11-19 overall, 8-9 in league play.
For Carey, tonight's double-double was his 10
th of the season and 25
th of his two-year Seahawk career. Wagner, which overcame a 13-point first-half deficit, did so without redshirt senior forward
Mike Aaman (Hazlet, NJ / Raritan / Rhode Island) who suffered a leg injury 3:13 seconds into the game and did not return.
Bryant opened its biggest lead of the night at 34-21 following a three-pointer by Nisre Zouzoua, the NEC's leading scorer, with 3:43 remaining in the opening half. Wagner closed the half with a 7-0 run to pull within 34-28 at intermission.
The Bulldogs opened the second half with six unanswered points by Zouzoua to push their lead to 12 at 40-28 with 18:14 left. The Seahawks then methodically chipped into the Bryant lead over the next 10:17, taking their first lead of the entire game at the 7:57 mark of the second half on a driving layup by Cooper.
The lead would jockey back and forth another four more times until Cooper nailed a contested jumper at 2:09 to give the Seahawks the lead for good at 66-64. Senior forward
Greg Senat (Elmont, NY / Elmont/ Marianapolis Prep [CT]) made 1-of-2 at the line to make it a 67-64 game with 1:22 left.
After Zouzoua misfired on a potential game-tying three-pointer at the 1:10 mark, Cooper missed a trey late in the shot clock on Wagner's ensuing possession with Henson being whistled for a foul on the rebound attempt with 37 ticks left.
After Adam Grant calmly made the two free throws to make it a one-point game at 67-66, Zouzoua came up with a steal at the 34-second mark before turning it over himself 10 seconds later before fouling Henson at the 21-second mark. The Maryland native knocked down both free throws to make it 69-66. Zouzoua's bid to tie it was a three-pointer with five seconds left was off the mark but the ball went out of bounds off of Wagner with three seconds left. Bryant then called timeout and designed a play for Grant but the guard's deep corner three-point try was well of the mark as the Seahawks held on the 69-6 win.
Once Wagner took its first lead at the 7:57 mark of the second half, the game would feature seven ties and seven more lead changes before the Seahawks finally prevailed.
Freshman guard
Blake Francis (Herndon, VA / Westfield) and
Connor Ferrell (Conyers, GA / Rockdale County / DME Sports Academy) each made significant contributions, scoring nine and seven points, respectively.
Zouzoua, a multi-skilled 6-2 sophomore guard from Brockton, MA, who entered the game with an NEC-leading 19.8 ppg. average, scored a game-high 25 points for the Bulldogs while Marcel Pettway and Grant finished with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Ikenna Ndugba paced Bryant on the glass with 10 rebounds.
Bryant held a slim 42 percent to 40 percent edge in shooting while the Seahawks held a 41-37 rebounding advantage,
