This fast-tempo, entertaining affair, featured four ties and 10 lead changes.
Wagner held a slim 40-38 halftime lead and appeared in control, using a 16-6 run to open the second half in pulling out to a 56-44 lead on a tip-in by redshirt sophomore forward A.J. Sumbry (East Windsor, NJ / St. Benedict's Prep / Quinnipiac) with 12:59 left to play.
The Seahawks held a 66-58 lead at the 5:33 mark following an old-fashioned three-point play by Carey. The Blackbirds, however, countered with a 13-4 run over the next 3:43,, capped by a top of the key three-pointer by Jerome Frink, in taking their first lead since it was 9-8 in the opening minutes.
Henson answered with a three-pointer to put Wagner back on top, 73-71, with 1:25 to go. After Iverson Fleming made 1-of-2 at the line with 1:11 left to make it a 73-72 game, Frink skied for a rebound off a missed three-pointer by sophomore guard
JoJo Cooper (Wilmington, DE, Concord) with 47 seconds remaining.
The Blackbirds worked the ball to Nura Zanna who was fouled by senior forward
Greg Senat (Elmont, NY / Elmont/ Marianapolis Prep [CT]). Zanna made the first to tie it at 73-73 before being called for entering the lane too soon on a free throw that was off the mark anyway.
Seahawk head coach
Bashir Mason then called timeout with 22 seconds left and drew up a play that resulted in a good 10-foot look from Henson from the left baseline that rattled in an out. The Blackbirds worked the ball into the Iverson's hands by the guard's running 35-footer at the buzzer bounded off the rim as the teams went to overtime tied at 73.
In the extra session, Henson hit a pretty 17-foot fallaway jumper to put Wagner in front 76-74 with 2:55 left but the Blackbirds responded with quick 5-0 spurt on an Iverson three-pointer at 2:44, followed by a Frink layup at 1:09 that out the Blackbirds ahead 81-76.
With Wagner behind 81-78 after a pair of free throws by freshman guard
Connor Ferrell (Conyers, GA / Rockdale County / DME Sports Academy). Henson then poked away a steal and hit a layup ahead of the field with 53 seconds to go to make it 81-80 but Fleming buried a big three for the Blackbirds with 26 seconds left to push the lead to 84-80 and they were able to hold on from there.
Frink had 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead four players in double figures for LIU. Fleming finished with 23 points while Jashaun Agosto and Raiquan Clark added 12 apiece, with Clark also grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds in becoming the second Blackbird to finish with a double-double.
