Women’s Water Polo Opens Up 2017 Season At ASU Invitational

CWPA Top 25 Poll

Staten Island, NY – Three-time defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) water polo champions Wagner open the 2017 season in Tempe, AZ on Saturday, January 28 as they compete in the Arizona State University (ASU) Invitational.

Led by seventh-year and reigning MAAC Coach of the Year, Chris Radmonovich, the Seahawks are slated to face three top-25 teams over the course of two days; the No. 5 host in the Sun Devils, No. 8 ranked University of California Santa Barbara, and No. 15 San Diego State University.

The Green & White are ranked No. 21 in the second Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) National Top 25 Poll after debuting at No. 20 in the Preseason Poll.

Wagner opens up the tournament against No. T-8 University of California Santa Barbara on January 28 at 12:30 pm (MST). The Gauchos enter the ASU Invitational with a 4-2 record after hosting their annual Winter Invitational from January 20-22. Despite losing 19-5 to No. 2 USC in the finale, UCSB defeated fellow MAAC preseason favorite, Marist 11-5 earlier in the day behind a stellar performance by senior Taylor Shore.

The Seahawks will then face No. 15 San Diego State University at 5:00 pm (MST) before closing out the weekend with a 9:00 am (MST) match-up against the hosts on Sunday, January 29. Despite being ranked in the National Top 25 Poll, both teams will also be competing for the first time in 2017.

Coach Radmonovich will look to senior captain Emily Riddle (Edmonton, Alberta / Dr. E.P. Scarlett) to lead the Seahawks throughout their challenging non-conference schedule. Voted MAAC Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year, the veteran netminder recorded nine and eight saves, respectively against UCSB and ASU a season ago. Additionally, junior Elise Begg (Newbury Park, CA / Newbury) netted two goals in Wagner's 8-6 loss to ASU last year, while junior All-MAAC Preseason selection Kimberly Watson (Pointe-Claire, Quebec / John Rennie) registered one goal and three steals against UCSB.

The Seahawks enter the 2017 season chasing their fourth consecutive MAAC Championship after besting Marist in the final game each of the last three years. Despite losing three 2016 All-MAAC selections to graduation, the Green & White have added four freshmen to its squad.
