Poughkeepsie, NY - The Wagner baseball team concluded the non-conference portion of its 2016 schedule with a 4-2 win on Mother's Day on the road against the Marist Red Foxes.
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 14-30 overall while Marist falls to 21-22 on the season. Â
Senior RF
Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ/West-Windsor Plainsboro South) was instrumental in today's victory, going 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Junior SS
Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) extended his hit streak to nine games, going 1-for-4 with an RBI. Â Sophomore LF
Kyle Cala (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) was the lone Seahawk with two hits and also drove in a run.
Senior LHP
Matt Morris (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) threw six innings, allowed six hits, two earned runs while striking out three in earning the win (3-4). Â Fellow classmate
Nathan Hunt (Kirtland, OH/Hawken School) pitched three scoreless innings of two-hit ball, striking out three batters for his third save of the season. Â
Joey Aiola led the Red Foxes at the plate with a 3-for-3 showing while Andrew Rouse and Frank Gregoire drove in Marist's only runs of the contest. Â Mike Coss took the loss, dropping him to 0-5 on the season after he threw seven innings, allowed six hits, three runs (two earned) while walking one and striking out five. Â
Marist got the scoring going in the bottom of the first as Rouse doubled to left center, scoring Graham McIntire from second. After a bunt single from Tyler Kirkpatrick, Gregoire sent a sacrifice fly to center plating Rouse.Â
Wagner cut the deficit in half in the top of the third inning. After Mascelli was hit by a pitch, Ruta grounded out to second, scoring Cala from third as the visitors trailed 2-1. Â
The Seahawks knotted the score at 2-2 in the fifth. With two outs and a runner on third base, Ruta hit a shot to first and beat out the throw, allowing sophomore 3B
Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School) to cross the plate. Â
After a scoreless sixth, Wagner took the lead at 3-2 in the seventh as Mascelli singled back up the middle scoring Cala from third base. The Green & White tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Cala, scoring freshman 1B

Wagner will be back in action on Thursday, May 12 as they kick off the final homestand of the season against defending Northeast Conference (NEC) champions, Sacred Heart. Â
