Staten Island, NY - For the second time in a two-week span, senior RHP
Mike Adams (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Holy Spirit) went the distance, while five of the nine Wagner hitters recorded two hits as the Seahawks completed a doubleheader sweep of the defending Northeast Conference (NEC) champions, Sacred Heart, 6-1.
With the victory, the Green & White improve to 16-30 overall and 10-16 in league play while the Pioneers fall to 27-21 on the year and 17-8 in conference action.
Adams earned his third victory of the season (3-6) after giving up one run on nine hits, yielding a walk while striking out six batters in his seven innings of work. Freshman catcher
Phil Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) was one of five hitters with two hits while driving in two RBIs in the victory.
Sacred Heart used three pitchers in relief of starter Jeff Stoddard, who suffered his first loss of the season (1-1) after giving up six hits and four earned runs in defeat.
The Pioneers got the scoring going after Victor Sorrento sent a towering fly ball to right field which allowed Ted Shaw to tag from third to score the game's first run.
Wagner answered back with two runs in its half of the frame. A leadoff single from junior shortstop
Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) got things going for the home nine before senior RF
Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ/West-Windsor Plainsboro South) sent a scorching shot to short and beat out the throw to first as Mascelli came in to score.
Down in the count at 0-2, Capra, a switch-hitting backstop who was hitting from the right side, doubled to the deepest part of left-center field, scoring Ruta from first as the Seahawks claimed a 2-1 lead.
Both teams threatened but did not score in the second before the Seahawks converted with two more in the bottom of the third in taking a 4-1 advantage.
Senior CF
Trey Nicosia (State College, PA/State College Area) kicked off the inning with a single through the right side, and Ruta was awarded first base after being hit by an errant pitch. After Nicosia had been forced out at third, sophomore LF
Kyle Cala (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) singled to center field, scoring Ruta from second.
A walk to freshman designated hitter
Anthony Pecora (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) loaded the bases for Wagner and all the runners moved up on a wild pitch from Stoddard, as Capra scored the team's fourth run of the game.
Sacred Heart had a chance in the fourth as Dan Schock singled through the left side. After a strikeout of P.J. DeFilippo, Jake Friar also singled through the left side and gave SHU runners on first and second. The next batter, Alex Perry, sent a single back up the middle. Schock circled third base and headed for the plate but an accurate throw from Nicosia one-hopped its way to Capra's glove, who was able to put the tag on Schock, cutting down the scoring chance.
Wagner tacked on two more in the bottom of the fourth, all coming with two outs. Mascelli doubled down the right field line followed by an RBI single from Nicosia, which extended the lead to 5-1. Capra capped his day with a run-scoring single to right as Nicosia plated the sixth run of the contest.
Adams continued to deal en route to throwing 107 pitches, 66 of which going for strikes. Over the final two innings, the Jersey Shore native recorded four punchouts, two of which came in the sixth, helping Wagner win its third straight contest.
The Seahawks and Pioneers conclude their four-game series on Saturday, May 14 with a doubleheader. The first game is set to begin at noon with Senior Day festivities approximately set to commence at 11:35 a.m.
