Smithfield, RI – The No. 2 seed Wagner women's lacrosse team, under first-year head coach Katie Rowan and led by two-time Northeast Conference (NEC) Midfielder of the Year Shea Gegan meets No. 3 seed Robert Morris at 7:00 p.m. tonight in the semifinals of the league tournament.

The winners of the Wagner-RMU game will face the winner of today's 4:00 p.m. semifinal, No. 1 seed Bryant (12-4, 6-1 NEC) vs. No. 4 seed Sacred Heart (8-7, 4-3 NEC), in the 2016 NEC Championship game on Sunday, May 8 at 1:00 p.m.

The Seahawks, (8-8, 5-1) who gained a share of the NEC regular season title for the first time in program history and earned the No. 2 seed for the third straight year, will meet No. 3 seed Robert Morris (9-7, 5-2) at 7:00 p.m. in the other semifinal. The winners will square off for the 2016 championship on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

In order to earn the No. 1 seed and accompanying home field advantage for the first time in school history, the Seahawks needed a win over Saint Francis U last Sunday, coupled with a loss by No. 1 seed Bryant in the Bulldogs' home game that day vs. Sacred Heart. Wagner did its part, improving to 6-1 in the NEC and 8-8 overall, posting a 15-11 win over SFU, but Bryant wound up defeating SHU by a 16-5 count, to also finish 6-1 in league play, and 12-4 overall.

Although the Seahawks and Bulldogs finished in a tie for the NEC regular season title with matching 6-1 league marks, Bryant owns the tiebreaker based on its 7-4 win over Wagner back on April 10. Thus, next weekend's four-team NEC Tourney is being held on No. 1 seed Bryant's home field in Smithfield, RI for the third consecutive season.

In each of the last two seasons, Wagner won its semifinal game, vs. Robert Morris in 2014 and Mount St. Mary's in 2015, before losing to homestanding Bryant in the championship game each time

Tonight's meeting with RMU comes one week after the Seahawks earned a dramatic 10-9 overtime road victory over the Colonials, which came on a goal by junior attacker Olivia Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ / Lenape) with 17 seconds left in the second three-minute overtime session, after receiving a feed from Gegan.

The All-NEC teams were announced Thursday evening at the annual banquet, hosted by Bryant. During the banquet Gegan earned her second straight NEC Midfielder of the Year Award, in addition to earning First-Team All-League honors for the third consecutive year.

Senior attacker Kimmy Tumolo and junior defender Amanda Rey (Turnersville, NJ / Washington Township) were tabbed Second-Team All-NEC, in a vote of the conference's eight head coaches.

For Rey, this marks the second year in a row that she has earned Second-Team All-NEC honors while Tumolu picks up the first All-Conference honor of her career.

Gegan continued to be a dominating force on both ends of the field for the Seahawks and is now a four-time All-NEC award recipient, including three straight first team honors. Gegan recently broke the NCAA career record for caused turnovers and has 225 entering the postseason.

A strong all-around performer, the Belmar, NJ native leads the league with 3.69 points per game and 3.19 caused turnovers per game, a figure that places her fifth nationally. She also ranks second in assists (1.38) and fifth in goals (2.31) per game. A three-time NEC Player of the Week and a former NEC Defensive Player of the Year, she paces Wagner in points (59), goals (37), assists (22), ground balls (40), draw controls (37) and caused turnovers (44).

On May 2, Gegan claimed her fourth straight NEC weekly honor and fifth of the season, as she has earned of three Player of the Week and two Defensive Player of the Week awards this season. Over the course of her career, Gegan has been recognized by the NEC a remarkable 15 times in her career.

In 2016, Rey ranks second on the Seahawks with 31 draw controls and 15 caused turnovers, and has compiled 20 ground balls.

Tumolo is second on the Green & White with 25 goals and 30 points. She also converted 9-of-12 free position shots.
