Norfolk, VA – For the first time this season, the Wagner baseball team swept a series, as the Seahawks completed the doubleheader with a 6-1 victory in game two against Norfolk State.  In the first game, the Green & White defeated the Spartans, 8-1.

With today's sweep of Norfolk, the Seahawks improve to 3-2 while Norfolk State falls to 3-8.  Wagner will continue its lengthy road trip on Tuesday, March 8 and Wednesday March 9 as they pay a visit to Charlottesville, VA as they take on the defending College World Series champions, the No. 19 ranked University of Virginia Cavaliers.

In game two of today's twin bill, junior shortstop Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) continued his hot hitting, finishing 4-for-5 with two runs scored in the game and for the day, the third-year Seahawk batted .700 (7-for-10) with 2 RBIs and the two runs scored.

Sophomore LF Anthony Godino (Thornwood, NY/Pleasantville) went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored while senior RF Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ/West-Windsor Plainsboro South) drove was credited with the team's only RBI in the contest.

On the hill, senior LHP Matt Morris (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) earned his first victory of the season after tossing five innings of five-hit ball, allowing one unearned run while striking out three Spartans.

Newcomer Douglas Molnar (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) appeared in his second game out of the pen, tossing three innings of scoreless ball, while giving up just two hits and striking two batters.  Senior RHP Mike Adams (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Holy Spirit), who was originally slated to start in this weekend series before wet condition forced today's doubleheader, pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Devin Hemmerich suffered his second loss of the season for Norfolk State, despite hurling 5.2 innings while giving up six hits, three runs (two earned) and striking out five Seahawk batters.

The Seahawks struck an inning later than they did in the first game, as they took a 2-0 lead in the top half of the third. Sophomore 3B Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) singled to lead off the stanza and scored on a two-out passed ball.  Ruta hit a chopper to short and hustled down the line, beating the throw which allowed
Mascelli to cross the plate for the second run of the contest.

The Spartans were able to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth as Angel Rosario drew a two-out walk. After a single to Roger Hall, Tony Leite reached on a dropped fly by freshman 1B Anthony Harrold (Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic). Harrold was able to redeem himself, squeezing the pop-up off the bat of Kevin Granger to end the threat.

The Green & White tallied its third run of the game in their half of the sixth as Godino tripled to right center and came home to score on a passed ball.  Wagner was able to add one in the eighth and two in the ninth off a pair of NSU mishaps.
