Junior RHP
Austin Goeke (Bordentown, NJ/The Hun School) earned his first victory of the season after tossing five shutout innings, allowing just two hits while walking two and striking out a season-best five batters. Freshman LHP
Neil Abbatiello (North Salem, NY/Dobbs Ferry) came on in relief of Goeke, lasting two innings while allowing a hit, one earned run and striking out a career-best four batters. Senior RHP
Nick Pavia (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph By The Sea) made his third appearance out of the bullpen, hurling the final two innings while allowing a hit and fanning four Spartans.
Matt Outman pitched seven innings for Norfolk State, allowing eight Seahawk hits, giving up three runs (all earned) while walking two and striking out a game-high eight batters in defeat. Jonathan Mauricio surrendered five unearned runs in his lone inning of work while Matt Boone tossed a scoreless ninth inning.
The Seahawk bats continued to stay hot, as they erupted for 13 team hits, which marks the third straight game in which the Green & White have double-digit hits on the ledger. The offense was led by junior shortstop
Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) and sophomore 2B
Kyle Brey (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South), who went 3-for-5 and 2-for-5, respectively, with 2 RBIs. In addition to Mascelli and Brey, junior backstop
Brendan Benecke (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) and senior 1B
John Lynn (Wallingford, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) each went 2-for-4 at the plate in the first game.
After a scoreless opening inning from both teams, Wagner erupted for three runs in the top half of the second. With one-out, Benecke drew a walk while Lynn reached on a fielder's choice. Sophomore 3B
Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) singled to left advancing Lynn to second base. Brey connected on a screaming single up the middle, scoring Lynn giving Wagner a 1-0 lead.
Mascelli followed suit with a single to centerfield, scoring Mazzio as the Seahawks claimed a 2-0 advantage. Senior CF
Trey Nicosia (State College, PA/State College Area) had the Seahawks' fourth-straight hit of the frame, as Brey crossed the plate for the final run of the inning.
A pitcher's dual commenced from the third through the sixth innings as the two squads combined for just four hits (3 for Wagner, 1 for Norfolk State) before the Spartans recorded its first run in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two-men out, Tony Leite flew out to senior RF
Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ/West-Windsor Plainsboro South), which scored Roger Hall from third base.
In the top of the eighth, Wagner scored its fourth run of the contest after Mazzio reached on a throwing error by Mauricio, allowing Benecke to cross the plate. Brey connected on his second hit of the afternoon, sending a single up-the-middle scoring Lynn. With one-out, Ruta doubled to left center, which allowed Brey to trout home, giving Wagner a 7-1 lead before Nicosia scored on a passed ball as Wagner plated its eighth run of the game.
Norfolk State was limited to just one hit in the final frame as Pavia struck out four of the final six batters in helping Wagner even its record to 2-2 on the season.
