#16 Wagner Women’s Water Polo Drops 12-10 Decision To #4 Hawaii

Score Sheet

Providence, RI
– The #16 Wagner (3-4) women's water polo squad dropped a highly contested 12-10 decision to #4 Hawaii on the opening night of the Brown-Bruno Classic hosted by Brown University.

The Seahawks trailed the Wahines 3-1 after the opening stanza in the contest as senior left-handed attacker Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA/ San Ramon Valley) tallied the lone goal for Wagner. Rodriguez rattled the cage off a slick pass from sophomore Kimberly Watson (Pointe-Claire, Quebec/ John Rennie).

The second quarter was a high-scoring back-and-forth affair with Hawaii registering five goals in the period and Wagner tossing in four.  The Seahawks were led by reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Offensive Player of the Year Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia/ Mountain Creek) who found the back of the net twice in the second quarter. Lundgren tallied on a five meter penalty shot and an unassisted strike for her two scores. Watson struck the back of the net as Rodriguez returned the favor from the first with senior center Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD/ Broadneck) scoring the fourth goal of the quarter for the squad.

The Wahine and Seahawks played to a 2-2 tie in the third period as play slowed down from the fast and furious second quarter.  Lundgren struck the back of the net again for her third of the contest with Watson securing her second goal. Sophomore attacker Lacey Anderson (Thousand, Oaks/ Westlake) recorded each of the assists in the period for the Green & White. Wagner entered the fourth and final quarter trailing Hawaii 10-7.

Wagner would outscore Hawaii 3-2 in the final stanza however it wasn't enough to claim the victory over the top-five ranked opponent.  Lundgren recorded two of the final three goals for the Seahawks to bring her game total to five while Doerfler added her second of the contest to bring the final score to 12-10 in favor of the Wahine.

Junior goalkeeper Emily Riddle (Edmonton, Alberta/ Dr. E.P. Scarlett) registered six saves for the Seahawks on the night.

Wagner is back in action again tomorrow against Indiana at 12:30 p.m. and Hartwick at 4:00 p.m.
