Indianapolis, IN - The Wagner women's water polo team is set to face top-seeded Stanford in the first round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament on Friday, May 9 at 12:00 PM ET at the IU Natatorium.
Last Time Out
Wagner advanced to the first round following a dominant 19-7 victory over McKendree in the opening round on Wednesday. The win marked the Seahawks' second consecutive NCAA Tournament opening-round triumph.
Season Summary
The Seahawks captured their 12th Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) title with a 14-11 win over Marist on April 26. Wagner finished the regular season 19-8, highlighted by six top-25 victories—including a program-first win over No. 16 Michigan (12-8) and a 14-9 decision over No. 14 Indiana. Wagner also defeated No. 23 Cal Baptist in March, helping the Seahawks climb from a preseason No. 18 ranking to No. 15 in the ACWPC national poll.
The team's success was complemented by several individual honors. Senior attacker
Carlota Alonso was named MAAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year, while junior goalkeeper
Francesca Sena earned her second straight Goalie of the Year accolade. Junior attacker
Magali Ogg landed on the All-MAAC First Team, and sophomore
Ana Arias received All-MAAC Second Team honors.
Wagner In The NCAA Tournament
Wagner improved to 5-8 all-time in NCAA Tournament play with its win over McKendree. The Seahawks previously earned tournament victories over Biola (2024), Salem (2022), and UC San Diego (2017, 2018). Wagner has qualified for every NCAA Tournament since 2014, excluding 2021 and 2023. This marks the second NCAA appearance for Head Coach
Josh Hower.
Scouting No. 1 Stanford
Stanford enters the tournament with a 22-1 record after claiming its eighth Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) title by defeating defending national champion UCLA, 11-9. The Cardinal have competed in all 24 NCAA Championships since the tournament's inception and are pursuing their 10th national title—and third in the last four years.
The Cardinal roster boasts five All-MPSF honorees, led by conference Player of the Year Ryann Neushul. Neushul, now sixth on Stanford's all-time scoring list with 223 career goals, headlines a star-studded lineup that includes Christine Carpenter, Jenna Flynn, Jewel Roemer, and Juliette Dhalluin.
Stanford defeated Wagner earlier this season, 24-4, at the Midwest Invite on February 8.
