Hana GilbertRock Hill, SC – The Wagner softball team opened the second day of the Winthrop tournament with a 5-3 win over Appalachian State before dropping a 3-2 decision to Brown University.
With the split, the Seahawks begin their 2016 campaign with a 2-2 record.
Game 1 – Wagner 5 vs. Appalachian State 3It was scoreless game until the Wagner cracked the scoreboard, posting two early runs in the third inning from a quality at bat from sophomore
Maddie Marable (Reno, NV/Earl Wooster).
During the fifth inning, junior
Hana Gilbert (Valley Center, CA/Valley Center) had a sac fly to score a run to take a 3-0 lead.
Appalachian State responded in the bottom of the seventh off of a three-run homerun by Cara Parker.
Gilbert proved to be the hero when she produced a two-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh to take the first game of a doubleheader in day two of the Winthrop tournament.
Game 2 – Brown 3 vs. Wagner 2After a scoreless five innings, Brown struck first with a three-run homerun in the top of the sixth to take a 3-0 lead.
Gilbert mounted a comeback in the bottom of the sixth when she launched her second homerun of the day to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Seahawks were able to produce another run in the seventh but finished on the short end of the 3-2 loss to Brown on Saturday evening.
