Women's Tennis Blanks St. Francis Brooklyn For The Second Time This Season; Improves To 2-0 In NEC Play

Brooklyn Heights, NY – The Wagner women's tennis team picked up its sixth victory of the season as they defeated the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers, 7-0, in a Northeast Conference (NEC) match on Saturday evening.

With the victory, Wagner improves to 6-2, more importantly, remain undefeated in conference-play, improving to 2-0. St. Francis Brooklyn falls to 0-4 and 0-2 in league action. 

In doubles, the Seahawks came out strong with senior Marina Rull Valvieso (Barcelona, Spain/IES Antony Cumella [Tarleton State]) and junior transfer Avika Sagwal (New Delhi, India/Delhi Public High Schools) picking up a 6-2 win over Vanja Savic and Jennifer Gonzalez at the first flight.  

Sophomore Samantha Hodges (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) and freshman Rina Baynes (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) posted a 6-0 victory over Dragana Dzigurski and Rebecca Mares. Finally, junior Madison Pautsch (Costa Mesa, CA/Edison) and senior Jenna Harris (Fountain Hills, AZ/Fountain Hills) earned a 6-1 triumph over Dezhane Bennett and Maery Fornolles.

The Green & White were able quickly wrap the match with three straight-set victories. Sagwal picked up a 6-0; 6-0 win at the first flight over Bennett while Rull Valvieso defeated Savic, 6-1; 6-0 at the second flight.  Hodges helped to wrap up the win for Wagner, also with a 6-1; 6-0 victory at No. 3 over Gonzalez.

"The girls played extremely well today," said second-year head coach Adrienn Hidvegi. "They came out strong in doubles and the momentum continued in their singles play."

Wagner will travel to Philadelphia, PA for its only scheduled match in the month of March as they will take on Drexel. The event commences at 10:30 a.m.
