BRONX, N.Y. — Wagner women's tennis wrapped up the Fordham Four Invite on Saturday, having competed against athletes from Columbia, St. John's, and Tarleton State.
The Seahawks played in four different singles matches on the first day of the invite, but only junior
Liepa Sataite was able to pick up a win. She defeated Columbia's Sabrina Lin in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) for a total of 12 game wins. Sophomore
Hannah FitzGerald came closest to picking up a win, as she won six games between her two sets, but still lost 4-6, 2-6 to St. John's Elena Milutinovic.
During the second day, Madail was able to rebound after her day one loss and record her first match win of the event. The Maturin, Venezuela native dropped the first set against Tarleton State's Nuria Lafitte 2-6, but came back to force a third set after winning 6-3. Madail made quick work in the final set by winning 10-3 to win the match.
In the doubles round of day two, sophomore
Alexia Estrada had to be paired with Fordham's Isabella Aguiar, and they took down Tarleton State's pair of Erika Abraham-Nilsen and Aruzhan Nuranbay 8-5.
Sataite and junior
Victoria Madail were the only true Wagner pair on day two, and while they forced a tiebreaker set, they ultimately dropped the match to Tarleton State's Lafitte and Anna Huisgen 8(8)-7(6).
Wagner started two doubles matches on day three of the event, with Estrada pairing up with Fitzgerald, and Madail pairing up with Fordham's Aguiar. However, each of their matches were abandoned due to the rain, concluding the Fordham Four Invite.
The Seahawks will return to the court on Wednesday, Oct. 7, as they travel to West Long Branch, New Jersey to take on Monmouth. The match will take place at the Monmouth Outdoor Tennis Courts starting at 3:30 p.m.
