Box Score 2 Rock Hill, SC – The Wagner College softball team split its first two contests of the 2016 season on Friday afternoon in the Winthrop Tournament against Towson and Rider University.
Game 1- Towson 3 vs. Wagner 2 (BOX SCORE) Wagner took an early 2-0 lead in the 2016 season opener and battled hard before dropping a 3-2 decision to Towson University Friday morning. The Seahawks got on the board early after Gilbert delivered a double to score senior catcher Brenda Bott (Fountain Valley, CA/ Fountain Valley) in the top of the first. The score remained 1-0 until senior catcher Megan Moore (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) launched her first homerun of the season in the fourth inning to gain a 2-0 lead for the Seahawks. Towson answered in the bottom of the fourth inning however with three runs to take a 3-2 lead, which would eventually be the final score of the season opener. Marable finished 2-for-3 while Prihoda, Bott, and freshman shortstop Erica Krumbine (Freehold, NJ/Saint John Vianney) each contributed a hit against the Tigers. In the circle, sophomore Morgan Brown (Buckeye, AZ/Verrado) pitched her first complete game of the season, posting five strikeouts. Game 2 – Wagner 14 vs. Rider 5 (BOX SCORE) After trailing Rider University 2-1 after the first inning, the Seahawks powered up their bats and never looked back when they posted six runs in the second inning followed by another seven in the third inning to pick up the their first win of the season.
Sophomore right fielder
Laura Petri (Warminster, PA/William Tenant) got things started for the Seahawks in her first at bat with a double to center field to score freshman third baseman
Karen Prihoda (Hamilton Square, NJ/The Lawrenceville School), who was walked, to cut Wagner's deficit to 2-1 heading into the second inning.
Rider responded in the top of the second inning, posting two more runs to make it 4-1.
Sophomore first baseman
Maddie Marable (Reno, NV/Earl Wooster) led off the bottom of the second inning with a single to right field and from there the Seahawks rallied as they stunned the Bronco's defense, putting up six runs in the second inning.
With bases loaded and only one out, Prihoda, junior centerfielder
Brianna Tredway (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) and junior left fielder
Hana Gilbert (Valley Center, CA/Valley Center) each singled to score a total of four runs. Petri then doubled to right field to score the final two runs of the inning to take a comfortable 7-2 lead.
Petri, however, wasn't done yet. The sophomore ignited the Seahawks in the third inning when she smashed a three-run homerun over the left field fence. The Seahawks posted a total of seven runs in the third inning to secure the lead and defeat Rider 14-5 in five innings.
Petri finished 3-for-4 with six RBI from the three-run homerun and two doubles. Gilbert was 2-for-3 with a single and a double, four RBI and two runs scored. Freshman catcher
Jessica Carlucci (Manalapan, NJ/Saint John Vianney) was a perfect 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored while Prihoda was 1-for-2 with one RBI and three runs scored.
Up NextThe Seahawks will be back in action for day two of the Winthrop tournament when they face Appalachian State at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
