Syracuse, NY – Wagner first-year head women's lacrosse coach will
Katie Rowan will return to where she starred as a collegiate player and served as an assistant coach when the Seahawks meet
No. 3 Syracuse in the famed Carrier Dome
on Sunday at
Noon.
The most decorated player in Syracuse history and a member of the 2009 and 2013 USA World Cup gold medalist teams, Rowan was featured this week in the Syracuse Post-Standard in a story by Lyndsay Kramer entitled,
"Wagner''s Katie Rowan Prepares for Emotional Return to Face Syracuse Women's Lacrosse."

"Not a ton of people get to play against Syracuse, let alone in the Dome. I really had to jump at that opportunity," Rowan told the Post-Standard. "t's going to be such mixed emotions going. It's going to feel amazing walking back into the Dome. It's going to bring me a lot of joy experiencing Syracuse and the Carrier Dome with my new team.''
Rowan is the Orange's career leader in points (396) and assists (164), and was the school's initial three-time First Team All-American selection, arrived on Grymes Hill last June after spending three seasons at her alma mater under head coach and Hall of Fame player, Gary Gait.
The 2016 Seahawks
dropped their season opener by a 17-12 count at Iona on Wednesday. Junior midfielder
Lauren Ednie(Verona, NJ/Verona) paced Wagner with a hat trick, while senior midfielder
Shea Gegan (Belmar, NJ/Manasquan) along with senior attackers
Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) and
Tori McGrath (Delmar, NY / Bethlehem Central) added two goals apiece .
The Seahawk seniors were instrumental in the offense on the afternoon as midfielder
Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) and
Taylor Pastore (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) had a goal and an assist each.
Stephanie Peterson (Vernon, NJ / Vernon Township) netted her first goal of the season. Gegan led the Green & White in points with four (2G, 2A) while Tumolo (2G, 1A) finished with three points.
Gegan led the team in draw controls with four while Fay and junior
Amanda Rey (Turnersville, NJ / Washington Township) added three draw controls apiece. In addition to being Wagner's leading goal-scorer, Ednie came up with a team-high three caused turnovers while Tumolo paced the Seahawks in the groundball department with three.
Sophomore goalie
Lucy Darlington (Timonium, MD / Notre Dame Preparatory) made her first career start in net and recorded three saves in the first half before giving way to senior
Katie Ferraro(Owings Mill, MD/ McDonogh) came on to register two saves while playing the entire second half.
Gegan enters her senior season after becoming the first recipient of the NEC Midfielder of the Year Award in 2015. The NEC Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore, Gegan led the nation last season in both caused turnovers (3.64/game) and ground balls (4.26/game), while also pacing the Seahawks with 36 goals, 25 assists and 61 points. Rey, who earned second team All-NEC honors last season, ranked second among Seahawks with 42 ground balls on the year.
