Madison, NJ – After competing in its first-ever competition last week, the Wagner women's fencing team participated in the program's first dual meets on Sunday at Drew University.
The first-year program fenced in six dual meets, against five different schools on the day, winning four out of six rounds in the foil competitions, while also notching two team victories in epee.
"I'm very happy with the way we competed today," said first-year head coach
Fatima Largaespada. "Winning four foil matches against some very competitive opponents is something my athletes should be proud of."
Against LIU Post, graduate students
Victoria McGrath (Delmar, NY / Bethlehem Catholic) and
Michelle Detka (Buckeye, AZ / Verrado (University of Houston) posted two victories apiece in the epee competition, while fellow graduate student
Corrine Rondina (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) also picked up a win to give the Seahawks a 5-4 epee victory.
Freshmen
Rebecca Errickson (Annandale, NJ / North Hunterdon),
Anais Mazic (Vienna, Austria / VBS Draschestrasse) and graduate student
Kristen Hayes (Menands, NY / Shaker) swept the foil competition with one victory each to give the Seahawks a 14-13 overall victory for their first win in program history.
Wagner also earned victories in the foil and epee competition vs. the City College of New York, with Mazic and Errickson earning two points each in the foil and McGrath, Detka, and Rondina combining for a tightly contested 5-4 victory in the epee.
The Seahawks' foil squad picked up a victory over fencing powerhouse Temple, as Errickson won her winner-take-all bout by a score of 5-2 to give Wagner the 5-4 overall win over the Owls.
Wagner's final team victory of the day came over TCNJ, as Errickson and Mazic won two bouts apiece in a 6-3 overall decision.
Next up, the Seahawks will travel to Pennsylvania to compete at the M. Garret Penn State Collegiate Open on November 19 and 20.
