Errickson Becomes First Wagner Fencer To Compete, Finishes 13th At Temple Open

Philadelphia, PA –Freshman Rebecca Errickson (Annandale, NJ / North Hunterdon) became the first Wagner fencer to ever compete at a collegiate tournament, as she finished 13th in the Temple Open's foil competition in Philadelphia on Saturday.

"This was a great day for Wagner fencing," said senior associate athletic director Brendan Fahey. "I am so happy for Rebecca for creating history and competing so well against top-notch competition."

In the first round of the foil bracket, Errickson beat Hunter's Jessica Hall (5-1) and Bryn Mawr's Emily Kampmeyer (5-0) for her first two collegiate victories. Despite two additional defeats, the New Jersey native advanced to the second round.

In the second round, the freshman garnered three victories, which came over FDU's Carly Edelman (5-0), North Carolina's Alicia Chen (5-3), and Kiera Wolfe of Johns Hopkins (5-3), while losing to NYU's Anastasiya Muravyeva (4-2).
"I'm very proud of Rebecca and the way she fought for every touch today," said first-year head coach Fatima Largaespada, who competed on the Temple fencing team for four years prior to her arrival at Wagner. "It's great to see her transitioning to college fencing and everyone saw her potential today."

In the round of 64, Errickson started as the 18th-seeded fencer and faced off with a member of Temple's club team, Allison Pierok. The freshman advanced on a 15-4 decision, before falling to Temple's Kennedy Lovelace, the tournament's eventual runner-up, by a score of 15-6.

The Seahawks will be back in action next weekend, as they compete at Drew University on Sunday, November 6.
