Swimming And Diving Victorious In Season Opener At Iona Quad

The Wagner swimming and diving team started off the 2016-17 season in impressive fashion, picking up three victories at the Iona College Quad on Saturday. 

The Green & White defeated the host Gaels, 188-49, fellow Northeast Conference (NEC) rivals, Sacred Heart 166-74 and St. Francis Brooklyn 196-39. 

For the day, the Seahawks took top honors in six events and sweeping both diving events.Wagner took first and second place honors in the 400 Medley Relay event. Tri-captain senior Anu Nihipali (Honolulu, HI/Hawaii Preparatory Academy) helped anchor the quartet of classmate Katja Claesson (Fullerton, CA/Troy High School), sophomore Andrea Gustafsson (Malmo, Sweden/ProCivitas Privata Gymnasium) and newcomer Kelsey Eastman (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley), who clocked in with a time 3:57.21. Freshmen Kelli Boston (Roseville, CA/Woodcreek), Katie Mulcahy (Helmetta, NJ/Spotswood), Emily Moore (Helmetta, NJ/Spotswood) and Paige MacNeil (Branford, CT/Branford) finished second in the event with a time of 4:05.42. 
 
Juniors Leahi Camacho (Kailua Kona, HI / Kealakene), Maddie McNichol (Downingtown, PA / Henderson), and Sam Lavrich (Audubon, PA / Methacton) led the way with two individual victories apiece. Camacho was victorious in the 1000 Free with a time of 10:49.46, while also finishing first in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:13.94. Tri-captain  McNichol garnered the top spot in the 200 Free (1:57.20) and 500 Free (5:15.90).

Nihipali earned a second-place finish in the 50 Free (24.29), while Eastman (54.12) and Gustaffson (54.24) touched second and third in the 100 Free. Claesson (2:26.31) and Mulcahy (2:27.31) came in second and third in the 200 Breast competition, and the 400 Free Relay, consisting of Nihipali, McNichol, Gustaffson, and Sullivan finished second in 3:35.97. Junior Kristine Sullivan (Overland Park, KS / Notre Dame de Sion) was the fastest competitor in the 200 IM (2:12.77), while Mulcahy and Boston finished second and third with times of 2:13.30 and 2:15.10, respectively. 
 
Junior tri-captain Sam Lavrich (Audubon, PA / Methacton) picked up first-place finishes in both the 1M and 3M diving events. Lavrich posted a score of 215.32 in the 1-meter and 234.60 in the 3-meter contest, while junior Grace Solipaca (Philadelphia, PA / Bishop Eustace) and freshman Daniele Polatnick (Huntingdon Valley, PA / Lower Moreland) completed the sweep by finishing second and third in both competitions.
 
The Seahawks will be back in action at the CCSU Invitational at Central Connecticut on November 4 and 5.
