Seahawks Conclude Second Day of Conference Games 1-1

Navy Highlights

George Washington Highlights

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College men's water polo team concluded its first-ever home stand 2-2 with victories over Navy and Division III No. 8 Johns Hopkins. The Seahawks are now 2-5 in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) East Region with three conference matches remaining.

Wagner 15 Navy 13
The Green & White won its second consecutive game after defeating conference foe, Navy 15-13.

The Seahawks were led by junior utility Ciaran Wolohan (Manly, Australia/St. Aloysius College/Golden West College) and sophomore utility Devin O'Donnell (Pointe-Claire, Quebec/Selwyn/San Diego Mesa College) who combined for seven of Wagner's 15 goals.

Navy's senior center David Huber registered the first goal of the match to give the Blue & Gold a 1-0 lead. However junior driver James Grady (Boca Raton, FL/Boca Raton) and freshman driver Oscar Nomura (Irvine, CA/Irvine) netted back-to-back markers as the Seahawks controlled the lead for the remainder of the contest.

Wagner went on a three goal streak to end the first quarter ahead 5-2 with tallies from Wolohan, Grady, and freshman driver Matthew Miller (San Ramon, CA/California High).

Despite being outscored 3-2 by the Blue & Gold in the second quarter, Wagner held onto its lead with an early goal from O'Donnell and a buzzer beater made by Nomura with one second remaining in the first half.

The second half was an even matchup as both teams scored eight goals apiece. Fresh off being named Walsh Electric's Male Student Athlete of the Month, Wolohan fired two goals in the third quarter and one more in the fourth.

Entering the final quarter ahead 11-8, Nomura, Miller, and O'Donnell each found the back of the net once more before the final buzzer as the Seahawks defeated MAWPC No. 5 15-13.

Wagner 10 George Washington 17
Despite holding George Washington's Atakan Destici, who tallied eight goals in their first meeting, to only three today, the Seahawks were bested by the Colonials 17-10 in their second face-off of the season. Freshman 2-meter guard Danny Rafael (Cooper City, Florida/Cooper City) led the Green & White offensively for the first time this season with five goals.

The Colonials took an early 2-0 lead, but four Seahawks registered goals in the first quarter to keep the score within one point. The Green & White ended the stanza trailing George Washington 5-4 behind goals from Rafael, Devin O'Donnell, Ciaran Wolohan, and freshman driver Aaron Leighton (Lake Forest, CA/El Toro).

Although the Colonials held Wagner to only two markers in the second quarter, they were unable to stop Rafael who claimed both of them to secure a hat-trick entering the second half.

The Green & White came out of the gates strong in the third quarter, winning the sprint and firing its seventh goal from freshman driver Oscar Nomura. However, George Washington netted four unanswered goals before Rafael drained one for the Seahawks just seconds before the third quarter concluded.

Trailing 15-8 into the final stanza, Rafael and Nomura added a pair of goals before the final buzzer.

The Seahawks return to the pool on Thursday, October 13 when they travel to Fordham University for a 7:30 pm conference matchup.
