West Long Branch, NJ –
The Wagner women's tennis team picked up its third victory of the season as they were victorious over the Monmouth University Hawks, 5-2, on Tuesday afternoon.

The Seahawks are now 3-1 on the year, having matched last season's mark through the first four matches (3-1) of the season.  Monmouth falls to 0-1 on the year.

"I am very proud of the team's progress through our first four matches of the year, which includes our performance at the Hofstra Invitational this past weekend," commented second-year head coach Adrienn Hidvegi. "It was great to see that girls didn't let the prior match affect them and were able to stick to the game plan against a gritty and tenacious Monmouth team."

The Green & White swept through the doubles match to take a 1-0 overall lead.  The duo of senior Marina Rull Valvieso (Barcelona, Spain/IES Anthony Cumella [Tarleton State]) and junior transfer Avika Sagwal (New Delhi, India/Delhi Public High School [Southeastern Louisiana]) improve to 6-1 on the season but in dual matches have yet to be defeated (4-0) as they edged the pairing of Adriana Armendariz and Alexandria Graff in No. 1 doubles, 6-4.

Senior Jenna Harris (Fountain Hills, AZ/Fountain Hills) and junior Madison Pautsch (Costa Mesa,CA/Edison) escaped No. 2 doubles with a 7-6 victory while sophomore Samantha Hodges (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) and freshman Rina Baynes (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) improved to 5-2 on the year, 3-1 in dual matches after securing the sweep with a 6-3 victory in No. 3 doubles.

In singles action, Monmouth was able to claim wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles before the Seahawks were able to rally to tie the overall match at No. 2 singles when Sagwal remains unblemished on the year, posting her fourth singles victory in dual action and seventh of the year after notching a 6-2; 6-1 victory over Graff in No. 2 singles.

Baynes was triumphant in No. 4 action when she defeated Chioma Gabriel, 6-3; 6-4. Pautsch earned career singles victory No. 15 as she defeated Maria Ivanova, 6-4; 6-1 in No. 5.  Harris was able to even her record back to .500 (2-2) as she downed Rayne Ruoff, 6-0; 6-1 for the Seahawks third victory of the season over a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) school.

The Seahawks will return to the courts on October 3, as they host Northeast Conference (NEC) rival, St. Francis Brooklyn at the Wagner Tennis Courts.  The match begins at 10:00 am.
