ResultsStaten Island, NY – The Wagner women's tennis team kicked off the fall season with an impressive 6-1 victory over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) member, Saint Peter's, on Saturday morning at the Wagner Tennis Court.
This morning's match was the season opener for both schools as the Green & White improve to 1-0 while the Peacocks fall to 0-1. In addition, the win increases Wagner' win streak over Saint Peter's to three straight.
"It was a very good start to the season," said second-year head coach
Adrienn Hidvegi. "The girls played very well. They were poised and collective and we build off this win."
The Green & White secured the doubles point by taking two of three matches. At No. 1 doubles, senior
Marina Rull Valvieso (Barcelona, Spain/IES Antony Cumella [Tarleton State]) and junior transfer
Avika Sagwal (New Delhi, India/Delhi Public High School [Southeastern Louisiana]) edged the pairing of Lucia Radovic/Claudia Hellman, 8-6.
In No. 2 doubles action, sophomore
Samantha Hodges (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy), who was named to the inaugural All-Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie Team last season, and newcomer
Rina Baynes (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) defeated Malieva Hedberg and Elena Melian Puigventos, 8-1.
Saint Peter's managed to salvage the final doubles match as Stephanie Falcon and Aidah Muhammad defeated
Jenna Harris (Fountain Hills, AZ/Fountain Hills) and
Madison Pautsch (Costa Mesa, CA/Edison) in a tightly contest match, 8-5.
The Seahawks claimed five of six singles matches. Rull Valvieso earned her tenth career singles win with a 6-1; 6-1 victory against Melian Puigventos. Hodges, who earned six wins a season ago, picked up where she left off as she defeated Hedberg, 6-1; 6-2 in No. 2 action.
No. 3 and No. 4 singles featured the Seahawks new players in Baynes and Sagwal, each securing their first Wagner wins. Baynes took a 6-3; 7-5 decision while Sagwal blanked Hellman, 6-0; 6-0 in No. 4 action.
Pautsch was able to overcome a 2-6 first set setback to take the match against Christian Resurreccion, 6-4; 10-6 as the Green & White earned their first victory of the year.
The Seahawks return to the courts September 16 as they travel to Lawrenceville, NJ to take on their second straight MAAC opponent, Rider.
