Game 2 Box Score (PDF)Staten Island, NY – After dropping a 12-3 decision to Bryant in game one of Saturday's Northeast Conference (NEC) doubleheader, the Wagner softball team picked up its first conference win of the season with a 5-1 victory in game two.
The Seahawks hit four home runs on the day and now have 19 on the season. The Green & White hit three in the second game in improving their record to 8-13 overall and 1-5 in NEC play.
Bryant took a 1-0 lead in the second game on a solo home run by Madeline Velasquez in the top of the first inning. Wagner then took a 3-1 lead in bottom of the first and never looked back. Junior catcher
Brenda Bott (Fountain Valley, CA/ Fountain Valley) had the big hit, booming a three-run home run to score sophomore's
Brianna Tredway (Downingtown, PA/ Downingtown West), who played centerfield, and second baseman
Taylor Beeson (Mesa, AZ/ Red Mountain).
Sophomore third baseman
Aerika High (Manheim, PA/ Manheim Central) added another run with a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth to expand the Seahawk lead to 4-1. High was 2-for-3 in the second contest and finished 3-for-5 on the day with two runs scored and one RBI.
Still holding a 4-1 lead going into the fifth inning, Beeson stepped up to the plate and belted a solo home run of her own down the left field line, providing the Seahawks with an insurance run.
In the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs threatened with runners on second and third after starting off the inning with a double from Taylor Burger, and a Cassie Mejia walk. Sophomore RHP
McKaleigh Goodale (Bradenton, FL/ Lakewood Ranch) was able wriggle her way out of trouble, settling down to throw a complete game three-hitter with four strikeouts for the win (3-4). Elle Madsen (6-12) took the loss for the Bulldogs.
In the first game, the Seahawks struck first when they rallied with two outs in the bottom of the second inning. Goodale, the designated player, singled up the middle, followed by a ground out by senior first baseman
Beth Lewis (Ashburn, VA/ Stone Bridge) that advanced Goodale to second. Sophomore right fielder
Hana Gilbert (Valley Center, CA/ Valley Center) then singled to left, scoring Goodale, while Gilbert advanced to second on the throw. Tredway then singled up the middle to score Gilbert to make it 2-0 after two innings.
Bryant built a 4-2 lead in third inning when the Bulldogs posted four hits - two singles, a double and a triple, in addition to taking advantage of a Seahawk error. The Bulldogs added another five runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a lead-off solo homer by Mejia, followed later by grand slam from Burger to make it a 9-3 contest.
High doubled to left field and came around to score from a Tredway double down the left field line to make it 9-3, but the Bulldogs tacked on three more runs in the top of fifth to conclude the contest 12-3 after five innings.
Senior shortstop
Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA/ Lynnwood) was 3-for-3 in game one, while Tredway 2-for-2 en route to a 3-for-4 day, which included with two RBIs and one run scored.
In the circle, senior
Samantha Bedker (Phoenix, AZ/ Sandra Day O'Connor) struck out three batters in 2.2 innings pitched and took the loss to fall to 2-8 on the season while Elle Madsen (6-12) earned the win for the Bulldogs.
The Seahawks are next in action on Monday, April 6 for a single game vs. Fairfield, a contest that was originally scheduled for March 18 but was postponed due to inclement weather.
