NEC PRESS RELEASE Live Video: NEC Front Row | Live Stats: SidearmStaten Island, NY – The Wagner women's lacrosse team looks for its first four-game Northeast Conference (NEC) winning streak in program history when the Seahawks host LIU Brooklyn today in a 3:00 p.m. matchup at Hameline Field.
After opening the season at 2-7 with four one-goal losses, the Green & White have won four straight, are 3-0 in the NEC for the first time, and 6-7 overall. As a team, the Seahawks, under the direction of second-year head coach
Liz Frisoli, rank No. 1 nationally with 12.77 CTs per game, and No. 2 nationally in ground balls per game (22.23).
The Blackbirds enter today's contest with a 2-1 mark in the NEC and are 6-7 overall.
Wagner is led by junior midfielder
Shea Gegan (Belmar, NJ/Mansquan), the nation's leader in both caused turnovers and ground balls per game, and the reigning ECAC Division I Metro/Upstate and NEC Defensive Player of the Week.
Gegan combined for 13 ground balls, 11 caused turnovers, six draw controls, five goals and four assists in Wagner's 2-0 week. In the Seahawks' 15-8 win over Robert Morris on April 10, Gegan, who has now won three NEC Defensive Player of the Week award this season, came up with team highs in ground balls (7) and caused turnovers (6), while adding four draw controls, two goals and two assists. In yesterday's 19-10 victory over Saint Francis U, she again filled the stat column, recording games highs with six ground balls and five caused turnovers, in addition to tallying a game-high five points on the strength of a hat trick and two assists.
The 5-10 Gegan leads the Seahawks in goals (28, 2.15/game, 7th NEC), assists (20; 1.54/game, 4
th NEC), points (48, 3.69/game, 5
th NEC), ground balls (56, 4.31/game, 1
st NEC) and caused turnovers (49, 3.77/game, 1
st NEC). Gegan also ranks No.2 on the team with 27 draw controls, three behind sophomore
Amanda Rey (Turnersville, NJ / Washington Township), who checks in with 30.
In addition to her nation-leading 3.77 CTs per game average, the 2014 NEC Defensive Player of the Year ranks No. 1 nationally in ground balls per game at 4.31. Gegan has now won six NEC Defensive Player of the Week awards in her career, as she capped the 2014 regular season by claiming the last three weekly defensive honors, in addition to the three she has copped this season.
