Video of Senior Day Ceremony I Sweeney Post-Game Interview I Highlights

Staten Island, NY – Junior attack Stephanie Peterson (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) poured in four goals for the second straight game while senior midfielder Jessica Mills (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) and junior midfielder Shea Gegan (Belmar, NJ/Manasquan) added three goals apiece to power the Wagner women's lacrosse team to a 19-10 win over Saint Francis U this afternoon.

In goal, Shannon Sweeney (Madison, NJ/Madison), one of six Seahawks honored in a pre-game ceremony on Senior Day, gained her second start of the season and was sharp throughout, recording a career-high 13 saves, including nine in the first half as Wagner surged out to a 10-0 lead at the intermission.

With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 3-0 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play for the first time in program history, while moving to 6-7 overall. Wagner now sits in a tie for first-place in the NEC standings with Bryant, which knocked off LIU Brooklyn 16-12 toady. With the loss, the Red Flash fall to 0-3 in the conference and 3-9 overall. The No. 1 seed in the final NEC standings will host the four-team 2015 NEC Championships next month.

Wagner's three NEC wins have all come by substantial margins. Prior to today's 19-10 triumph over SFU, the Seahawks earned a 13-7 road win over Mount St. Mary's on April 4, followed by Friday's 15-8 home victory over Robert Morris.

In racing out to their 10-0 halftime lead, the Seahawks received two goals each from Peterson and Mills, before second-year head coach Liz Frisoli began to substitute liberally in the second half. The Red Flash got on the board with 27:59 to play on an unassisted goal by Katie Schaaf that made it a 10-1 game. When sophomore attack Nicole Luzzi (Branford, CT/Branford) scored her second consecutive goal, with both scores coming within a 23-second span, the Seahawks held a comfortable 13-3 margin at the 19:16 mark.

SFU then rallied with three straight goals to make it a 13-6 game with less than nine minutes left, and were within 15-9 with four minutes to go, before Wagner slammed the door with four unanswered goals in a span of 2:07 in winning the contest going away.

While Peterson was the game's leading goal-scorer with four, Gegan was the game-leader in points with five, as she added two assists to her three goals. The reigning NEC Defensive Player of the Week played another strong all-around game, finishing with game highs in ground balls (6) and caused turnovers (5), a category in which she leads the nation.

Mills finished with four points (3G, 1 A), junior attack Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview) added three points (1G, 2A), while Luzzi (2G) and senior midfielder Chantal Agnew (Poolesville, MD/Poolesville) (2G) wound up with two points apiece.

Adding single goals for Wagner, on a day where 10 different players found the net, were senior midfielder Gretchen Fay, who also had one assist, along with junior midfielder Jessica Roberts (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), junior attack Tori McGrath (Albany, NY/Bethlehem Central) and freshman midfielder Lauren Ednie (Verona, NJ/Verona).

For Saint Francis U, Rebecca Meyer, Sarah Mahon and Holly Lawrence led the way offensively with two goals each. Heather McKee registered five saves in goal during the first half before giving way to Elizabeth Henry, who came on register 11 saves in the second half.

Statistically, Wagner outshot the Red Flash 39-28 and won 20-of-29 draw controls while SFU held a 26-22 edge in ground balls. The Seahawks were successful on 4-of-9 free-position shots while holding the Red Flash to 1—of-9 in this category.

Wagner continues a stretch of four consecutive home games by hosting LIU Brooklyn on Friday, April 17 in a 3:00 p.m. start, followed by a 1:00 p.m. affair with Sacred Heart on Sunday, April 19.

NOTES: The six Seahawks honored in the pre-game Senior Day ceremony included Chantal Agnew, Jessica Mills, Nicole Thom, Shelby Steadman, Megan Sardella and Shannon Sweeney.
