Clearwater, FL – The Wagner softball fell to Dayton 7-0 in the first day of the USF Under Armour Showcase Friday evening.
Due to inclement weather, the second game against Maine got postponed to Sunday, March 8 at 1:30 p.m.
The flyers came out strong offensively, recording 11 hits while Wagner struggled to get the bats going. The Green & White only had two hits in the game from sophomore pitcher
McKaleigh Goodale (Bradenton, FL/ Lakewood Ranch) and junior
Brenda Bott (Fountain Valley, CA/ Fountain Valley).
Dayton put up a run in the second inning after the Flyer's Kathryn Hess doubled out to center field, scoring Kayla Haberstich to get on the board first (1-0). Wagner played tough to keep the deficit to one run until the fourth inning when the Flyers went on a hitting frenzy and scored four runs.
Freshman pitcher
Morgan Brown (Buckeye, AZ/ Verrado) started on the mound for the Seahawks for the first half of the game. The freshman tallied three strikeouts. Sophomore pitcher Gina Massero (Levittown, PA/ Cornwell- Egan Catholic) came in for relief in the fourth to finish out the game, also striking out three Dayton batters.
The Seahawks return to action on Saturday, March 7 for day two of the USF Under Armour Showcase. Wagner first faces North Florida at 1:45 p.m. followed by Georgetown at 4:15 p.m at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, FL.
