Staten Island, NY – Nicole Tiernan scored three of her game-high five goals in the second half as Temple overcame an 8-4 halftime deficit in posting a 10-9 victory over Wagner at soggy Hameline Field this afternoon.
In dropping their second straight one-goal game, which comes on the heels of Monday's 13-12 double-overtime loss at Saint Joseph's, the hard-luck Seahawks fall to 2-4 on the season while the Owls, who compete in the Big East Conference, improve to 5-1.
Wagner built its 8-4 halftime lead behind two goals each from reigning NEC Defensive Player of the Week
Shea Gegan (Belmar, NJ/Manasquan), sophomore attack
Olivia Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and junior midfielder
Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan). Tiernan led the Owls with two first-half goals.
After Temple jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a free position shot by Tiernan 1:04 into the game, Streilein connected at the 27:52 mark off a Gegan feed, tying the game at 1-1 and kick-starting a 4-0 Wagner run. Fay and Streilein followed with unassisted goals within a span of 1:26 to make it 3-1, before Gegan capped the run by sinking a free-position shot at the 21:34 mark, extending the Seahawk lead to 4-1.
Nicole Barretta then got one back for the Owls, an unassisted tally with 20:37 to go in the half, to cut the deficit in half at 4-2. After Fay pushed the lead back to three goals, at 5-2, with her second unassisted score of the half at the 17:58 mark, Macie Hauck and Tiernan answered with consecutive goals, each coming on free-position shots, with the latter score at the 8:40 mark making it a 5-4 game.
The Seahawks then closed the half on a 3-0 spree, all coming in the final 3:54 of the opening stanza, in galloping out to their 8-4 halftime bulge. Junior attack
Stephanie Peterson (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) buried a shot at 3:54 after receiving a pass from senior midfielder and former high school teammate,
Jessica Mills (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township), which made it 6-4.
With 2:56 remaining in the half, Gegan notched her second goal, an unassisted score that made it 7-4, which was followed two minutes later by an unassisted goal out of the stick of freshman midfielder
Lauren Ednie, yet another Seahawk who starred at New Jersey's Vernon Township High School, that lifted the Seahawks' to their four-goal halftime lead.
Wagner outshot its Big East counterparts 17-12 in the opening stanza and led in ground balls 13-11, while holding a slim 7-6 edge in draw controls.
Temple got on the board first in the second half as Kathryn Skahan netted an unassisted goal at the 28:16 mark to make it an 8-5 game. Rachel Barile then delivered the first of her two second-half goals with 20:45 left to play, making it a two-goal game at 8-6.
Fay momentarily quelled the Temple momentum by answering back at the 13:25 mark, off an assist from junior attack
Taylor Pastore (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), giving the Jersey Shore product a hat trick while providing the Seahawks with a three-goal cushion at 9-6.
Tiernan then took over, rattling off three consecutive goals, the first two coming on free-position shots, at 11:43 and 10:25, respectively, the latter of which made it a 9-8 game. The explosive 5-6 junior midfielder then sank the equalizer, an unassisted blast with 3:46 to play, before Barile slammed home the eventual game-winner off a pretty feed from Hauck. This goal put Temple in front 10-9, which marked the Owls' first lead since it was 1-0, and the Cherry & White were able to hang on from there for the one-goal win.
In addition to Tiernan's five goals, Barile wound up with two while Hauck , Skahan and Barretta finished with one goal apiece.
For Wagner, Fay's three goals led the way while Gegan and Streilein finished with two goals each. Gegan's assist gave her three points on the day, while finishing with one point apiece were Peterson (1G), Mills (1A) and Pastore (1A).
Junior
Katie Ferraro (Owings Mill, MD/McDonogh) recorded seven saves in goal for the Seahawks. Temple Jaqui Kakalecik also had seven saves, none bigger than the one off of a close-range shot by Peterson with just over a minute left to play, which preserved the Owls' 10-9 lead.
Statistically, Temple held a narrow edge in both shots (26-24) and ground balls (27-25), while winning 13-of-21 draw controls. The Owls were successful on 6-of-11 free-position shots while Wagner was just 1-of-4 in this category.
Wagner now has a 10-day break before swinging back into action on Saturday, March 14 when the Seahawks host the George Mason Patriots in a 1:00 p.m. start.
