New York, NY – Junior midfielder
Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) scored two goals and her former high school teammate,
Shea Gegan (Belmar, NJ/Manasquan), the other half of the Seahawks' "Jersey Shore Combo," collected a career-high 10 ground balls but it was the Columbia Lions who pulled away for a 12-5 win in women's lacrosse action.
In dropping their fifth straight game, Wagner falls to 2-7 on the season while Columbia improves to 3-5.
Junior attack
Taylor Pastore (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) gave the Seahawks an early 1-0 lead on a free-position shot 1:53 into the contest. After the Lions tied the game, Fay gave the Seahawks their final lead of the game, at 2-1, with an unassisted tally with 24:56 remaining in the first half. After Columbia went on a 3-0 run in building a 4-2 lead, Fay's second goal, another unassisted tally at the 12:30 mark of the opening half, made it a 4-3 game. This is as close as Wagner would get, however, as the Lions went on another 3-0 tear over the final 8:58 of the half in extending their lead to 7-3 at intermission.
Columbia then opened the second half with a 3-1 run to make it 9-4 en route to posting the 12-5 win.
Freshman attack
Heidi Colford (Eden Praire, MN/Eden Praire) and sophomore attack
Olivia Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) notched second-half goals for the Seahawks while Taylor Quinn paced Columbia with a game-high three goals in the contest.
Wagner held a 25-21 edge in ground balls but the Seahawks were outshot 23-20, while the Lions held a commanding 14-5 lead in draw controls. Columbia was particularly effective on free-position shots, scoring on 4-of-7 FPOs while the Seahawks were just 1-of-6 on their free-position shot opportunities.
Shannon Sweeney (Madison, NJ/Madison) gained the start in goal for the Seahawks. Seeing her first action of the season, the senior allowed six goals and made two saves while playing the first 25:25 of the game.
Katie Ferraro (Ownings Mill, MD/McDonogh) came on with 4:35 left in the first half and the Seahawks trailing 6-3. The junior wound up playing the final 34:35 between the pipes and allowed six goals while recording six saves.
The Seahawks are next in action on Tuesday, March 31 when they play host to Delaware State at Hameline Field with opening draw set for 4:00 p.m.
