READ ABOUT TEAM'S RECENT TRIP TO THE TODAY SHOWStaten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's lacrosse team looks to return to its winning ways when the Seahawks host the Iona College Gaels at Hameline Field in a 3:00 p.m. start today.
In a contest that was played in a thick fog on a damp, chilly day on Grymes Hill last Saturday, the hard-luck Seahawks dropped their third consecutive one-goal game as George Mason eked out an 11-10 win. This defeat came on the heels of a 10-9 home loss to Temple (3/4), which was preceded by a 13-12 double-overtime loss at Saint Joseph's (3/2).
Trailing 10-7 late in the second half, Wagner erupted for three straight goals in a span of 2:44 in tying the game at 10-10, before George Mason's Alexa McGovern tallied the game-winner with 31 seconds remaining.
The Green & White are 2-5 on the season while Iona enters today's matchup with a 3-4 mark. The Gaels have faced two NEC opponents this season and own a 15-5 season-opening road win over Sacred Heart and a 10-8 home loss to Central Connecticut. Last time out, Iona dropped a 19-5 decision at Albany.
Against George Mason on Saturday, Wagner received balanced scoring with two goals apiece coming from junior midfielders
Shea Gegan (Belmar, NJ/Manasquan) and
Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan), as well as junior attack
Taylor Pastore (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker). Gegan, the 2014 Northeast Conference (NEC) Defensive Player of the Year and current NCAA leader in caused turnovers per game, also dished out two assists in amassing a team-high four points. Fay was also active throughout in registering a game-high six draw controls.
Sophomore attack
Olivia Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) added three points (1G, 2A), junior attack
Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview) wound up with two points (1G, 1A), while fellow junior attackers
Tori McGrath (Albany, NY/Bethlehem Central) and
Stephanie Peterson (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) chipped in with one point each on an assist and a goal, respectively.
Gegan enters today's game ranked No. 1 in the nation in caused turnovers per game (3.71) and No. 3 nationally in ground balls per game (3.57), with both figures also ranking tops in the Northeast Conference (NEC). The 2014 NEC Defensive Player of the Year, Gegan also ranks No. 3 in the nEC in assists per game (1.57) and No. 8 in points per game (3.57).
In addition to pacing the Seahawks in caused turnovers and ground balls with 25 each, the 5-10 Gegan is Wagner's team-leader in goals (14), assists (11), and points (25), and is tied for second on team with eight draw controls.
Junior goalie
Katie Ferraro (Owings Mill, MD/McDonugh) is ranked eighth in the nation in both total saves (71) and saves per game (10.33), which rank No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the NEC. Ferraro also leads the conference with a 0.490 save percentage, a figure that ranks No. 22 nationally.
