Staten Island, NY – Trailing by a score of 10-7 late in the second half, the Wagner women's lacrosse team erupted for three straight goals in a span of 2:44 in tying the game at 10-10, before George Mason's Alexa McGovern tallied the game-winner with 31 seconds remaining in lifting the Patriots to an 11-10 victory this afternoon.

In a contest that was played in a thick fog on a damp, chilly day at Hameline Field, the Seahawks dropped their third consecutive one-goal game as their season record falls to 2-5. George Mason, which plays in the competitive Atlantic 10 Conference, improves its season mark to 4-2. For the hard-luck Seahawks, today's defeat comes on the heels of  a 10-9 home loss to Temple (3/4), which was preceded by a 13-12 double-overtime loss at Saint Joseph's (3/2).

Wagner received balanced scoring with two goals apiece coming from junior midfielders Shea Gegan (Belmar, NJ/Manasquan) and Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan), as well as junior attack Taylor Pastore (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker). Gegan, the 2014 Northeast Conference (NEC) Defensive Player of the Year and current NCAA leader in caused turnovers per game, also dished out two assists in amassing a team-high four points. Fay was also active throughout in registering a game-high six draw controls.

Sophomore attack Olivia Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) added three points (1G, 2A), junior attack Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview) wound up with two points (1G, 1A), while fellow junior attackers Tori McGrath (Albany, NY/Bethlehem Central) and Stephanie Peterson (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) chipped in with one point each on an assist and a goal, respectively.

George Mason was led offensively McGovern, who tallied a game-high five goals, while Jacquelyn Spalding also finished with five points (2G, 3A) for the Patriots. Scoring two goals apiece for GMU were Melissa Lobaccaro and and Jordan Sdanowich.

The Seahawks took a quick 1-0 lead in this one as Pastore found the back of the net off of a Streilein feed just 32 seconds into the contest. After two consecutive unassisted goals by Gegan, Wagner led 3-2 at the 13:41 mark before the Patriots answered with five unanswered goals, capped by a Sganowich score with 17 seconds left in the half, that gave GMU a 7-3 halftime bulge.

Wagner came out of the gate on fire in the second half on goals by Tumolo, Streilein and Fay, in a span of just 1:50, to make it a one-goal game at 7-6 with 27:10 remaining. GMU then countered with goals by Spalding and McGovern in pushing the lead back to three goals at 9-6 with 22:02 left.

A Pastore goal off of a Tumolo assist at the 12:46 mark was followed by a McGovern goal at 11:23 that again gave the Patriots a three-goal lead, this time at 10-7. That's the way the score remained until Fay buried a shot with 4:08 left off a McGrath feed to make it 10-8. At the 2:23 mark, Peterson nailed an unassisted goal that made it 10-9.

With the clock winding down, senior attack Jessica Mills (Vernon, NJ/Vernon Township) sank the equalizer, on a running shot from 10 yards out off of a Gegan assist, that made it a 10-10 game with 1:24 left. Then, with 31 seconds left, McGovern converted what would prove to be the game-winner, off a Spalding pass, and the Patriots hung on from there.

Taylor Carpentier recorded eight saves in earning the victory in goal for GMU, which matched the eight saves registered by Seahawk junior goalie Katie Ferraro (Ownings Mill, MD/McDonogh).

Statistically, Wagner held the edge in both shots (26-23) and ground balls (17-13) while the Patriots owned a slight 11-10 advantage in draw controls.

The Green & White are next in action on Wednesday, March 18 when they host local rival Iona in a 3:00 p.m. start at Hameline Field.
