Wagner Softball Set For Cherry Blossom Classic This Weekend

Fairfax, VA – The Wagner College softball team heads to Fairfax, VA for the Cherry Blossom Classic, hosted by George Mason University, for a five-game set beginning with a 12:15 p.m. matchup vs. Georgetown on Friday, March 13.

Coming off of a 2-4 showing at the USF Under Armour Showcase last weekend in Clearwater, FL, the 4-6 Seahawks will meet Akron in Game 2 on Friday at 2:30 p.m. Wagner will then meet Georgetown again on Saturday at 12:45 p.m., followed by a 5:15 p.m. contest vs. host George Mason before wrapping up the Classic on Sunday with another meeting against George Mason at 12:30 p.m.

Friday's game vs. Big East member Georgetown will mark the second meeting between the teams in a six-day span as the Seahawks earned a 2-0 win over the Hoyas at the USF Showcase last Saturday. This victory came on the heels of a 7-6 decison over North Florida, which competes in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Wagner also dropped a pair of one-run games in the Showcase,  falling to American Conference foe USF, 1-0, and to the University of Pennsylvania by a 2-1 count.
 
Senior shortstop Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA/Lynnwood) leads the Seahawks at the plate with a .393 batting average and 11 hits overall. Last weekend, she produced four hits for the Green & White, including a double, to go with two runs scored and one RBI.
 
Sophomore centerfielder Brianna Tredway (Downington, PA/Downington West) paced the Seahawks at the USF Under Armour Showcase, recording six hits on the weekend, while going  3-for-4, including a home run, which came against North Florida, one double and three runs scored.
 
Sophomore second baseman Taylor Beeson (Mesa, AZ/ Red Mountain) also had an impressive weekend, registering four hits, highlighted by a two-run homer. vs. Maine. Junior catcher Brenda Bott (Fountain Valley, CA/ Fountain Valley) contributed five hits for Wager and three RBI on the weekend, highlighted by a 2-for-3 effort in the 2-0 victory over Georgetown.

Georgetown: The Hoyas enter the weekend fresh off of a seven-game series at the USF Under Armour Showcase and currently own a 7-9 overall record. Senior standout Megan Hyson earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending February 15, when she went 3-0, pitching two complete games with 18 strikeouts.
 

Akron: The Zips bring an 8-11 overall record to the Cherry Blosson Classic this weekend after finishing 2-4 at the Rebel Games in Winter Haven, FLA, March 6-8. Akron was picked third in the 2015 MAC Preseason Poll. Sophomore Alyssa Nicholas was named MAC Player of the Week, for the week ending March 10. At the Rebel Games, the third baseman batted .421, with eight hits, including a home run, two doubles and five RBI. She leads the team in batting average (.321), hits (18) and RBI (12).
 
George Mason: The Patriots are still searching for their first win of the season (0-9) after being picked seventh in the Atlantic 10 Conference. GMU is led by Brooke Blankenship who leads the team with 12 hits and is tied with Liz Seymour for team-high honors in RBIs with six.
