Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's soccer team concluded it's 2015 campaign just one win shy of making back-to-back Northeast Conference (NEC) tournament appearances under head coach
Mike Minielli.
The Green & White finished with an overall record of 5-12-1 while posting an even 4-4 mark during conference play. After a slow start into conference play, the Seahawks had to win out the remaining four conference games of the season in order to head to the post-season. Wagner rallied out a three-game win streak before dropping a heart-breaking 2-1 loss to Central Connecticut in the regular season finale.
After suffering an injury during the first half of the season, freshman goalkeeper
Katie Viscardi (Hazlet, NJ/Mater Dei Prep) returned for the final nine games of the season and made herself a force to reckon with between the pipes. In just nine games, Viscardi logged three shutouts. The New Jersey product finished her freshman campaign 4-5-0 overall, being in net for four of the Seahawks' five wins.
Viscardi was named to the NEC All-Rookie team and garnered Defensive Player of the Week accolades two weeks in a row while also being a NEC Rookie of the Week selection. She finished third overall in the conference in goals against average (1.44) and also save percentage (.803). Viscardi lead the Seahawk goalkeepers, posting 53 saves, setting a career-high of 11 stops in a conference matchup against Robert Morris on October, 16.
Rounding out the Seahawks' honorees this season was junior midfielder
Megan Fritz (Cape Coral, FL/Mariner) who garnered Second Team All-NEC honors. The sunshine state native appeared and started for the Seahawks in all 18 games while leading the squad and setting two career-highs in points (12) and goals (5). Fritz was ranked among the top 10 in the NEC for both points and goals. In a 4-2 win over St. Peter's on August 26, Fritz led the way with two goals and also had a crucial goal in Wagner's first conference 2-1 win over LIU Brooklyn.
The Seahawks' graduate three seniors this year in forward
Samantha Jensen (Ocean Gate, NJ/Central Regional), midfielder
Johanna Konrad (Volkach, Germany/LSH) and defender
Victoria Roda (Staten Island, NY/Petrides [Saint Leo's]). All three contributed to their senior season greatly as Konrad recorded three goals and an assist to finish second overall on the team in points (7). Konrad had the eventual game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over LIU Brooklyn (Oct. 9). Jensen posted a goal with two assists for four points while Roda tallied an assist in their senior campaigns.
