Results

Staten Island, NY – In their final match of the fall season, the Wagner women's tennis team picked up its first Northeast Conference (NEC) victory of the year, defeating local rival, St. Francis Brooklyn, 7-0, on Saturday morning from the Wagner Tennis Courts.

With the victory this morning, the Seahawks concluded the first half of their season with a 4-2 record and 1-0 in conference play while the Terriers suffered its first loss as they stand at 0-1 overall and in league play.

"I am very pleased about the team's performance this fall," commented second-year head coach Adrienn Hidvegi"We got off to a fast start this fall and we will look to continue that momentum, in practice as we now set our sights on our spring season."

The Seahawks swept all three doubles matches to earn the first overall point of the match.  The pairing of senior Marina Rull Valvieso (Barcelona, Spain/IES Antony Cumella [Tarelton State]) and reigning NEC Player of the Month Avika Sagwal (New Delhi, India/Delhi Public High School [Southeastern Louisiana]) improved to 7-2 on the year out of the No. 1 position after posting a 6-0 victory over the pairing of Vanja Savic and Dezhane Bennett.

Freshman Rina Baynes (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) and sophomore Samantha Hodges (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) extended their unbeaten streak to three straight while tying Rull Valvieso and Sagwal with their seventh victory of the year as Baynes & Hodges blanked Jennifer Gonzales and Rebecca Mares in No. 2 doubles action.  Junior Madison Pautsch (Costa Mesa, CA/Edison) and sophomore Carolyn Gibson (Windermere, FL/IMG Academy) were awarded the victory at No. 3 doubles via default.

Wagner was dominated in singles play, taking all six matches.  In the process, Rull Valvieso earned her 12th singles victory as a Seahawk in her victory at No. 1 singles.  For Sagwal, she collected her team-leading eighth win of the season, securing the win out of the No. 2 spot while recording the first of three shutouts in singles play, along with Baynes (No. 4) and Pautsch (No. 5).  Senior Jenna Harris (Fountain Hills, AZ/Fountain Hills) won by default at No. 6 singles.

The women's tennis team returns to the courts on February 20, 2016 as they travel to Easton, Pennsylvania to tangle with the Lafayette College Leopards in the Seahawks first match of their spring season.
