Video Highlights (necfrontrow.com)Smithfield, RI – The No. 2 seed Wagner women's lacrosse team saw its school-record seven-game winning streak come to an end as the Seahawks fell to No. 1 seed Bryant 14-6 in the 2014 Northeast Conference (NEC) Women's Lacrosse Championship Game this afternoon.
Sophomore
Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview) recorded a hat trick to tie sophomore
Taylor Pastore (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) for team-high scoring honors with three points as Pastore contributed two goals and one assist.
Sophomore
Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) delivered a stellar all-around game, with one goal and a team-high four caused turnovers (CT), while sophomore
Katie Ferraro (Owings Mill, MD/McDonogh) turned away five shots in goal for the Seahawks.
Tournament MVP Laura Descalzo paced the Bullldogs with seven points on six goals and an assist while Kimberly Sniffen had four points (3 goals, 1 assist). Haley Bloom and Katherine Keckesen added two goals for Bryant, who received a seven-save outing from goalie Brianna West.
Wagner placed four players on the All-Tournament team in Tumolo, Fay, Daly and Ferraro. Tumolo's three-goal game today came on the heels of a four-goal, one-assist affair in Friday night's impressive 17-7 semifinal win over Robert Morris, to give her eight points (7 goals, one assist) for the tournament.
Fay scored two goals, to go with two draw controls and one groundball in the win over RMU and, combing with today's effort, finished the tourney with three goals, four C, two draw controls and two groundballs. Ferraro had nine and five saves vs. Bryant and RMU, respectively, while Daly's team-high five draw controls in today's championship contest keyed her selection to the All-Tournament team.
Wagner, under the guidance of first-year head coach
Liz Frisoli, ends the season tied with the 2002 team for the most single-season wins in school history, finishing with an overall mark of 11-7. The Seahawks went 6-1 in NEC play this season, tying the school mark for most single-season league wins while achieving an .857 winning percentage which was also tops in program history.
The Seahawks' lone blemish in NEC regular season play came against these same Bulldogs back on April 4 when Wagner dropped a 7-6 decision in double-overtime on a rainy, windswept afternoon at Hameline Field.
That victory by the Bulldogs triggered a season-ending winning streak that reached nine games today on a sunny, breezy day at Bulldog Athletic Field. With the win, Bryant earns the NEC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which begins with first-round games on May 9.
The Bulldogs, who lost to Monmouth 13-6 in last year's NEC title game, will enter NCAA play with a 15-3 overall record. The format for the four-team NEC Women's Lacrosse Championships has all games played at the site of the regular season champions. Bryant gained the right to host this year's tournament after posting a perfect 7-0 record in league play.
Bryant gained a spot in the championship game following Friday's 13-7 win over No. 4 Central Connecticut while Wagner earned its way into the program's first-ever NEC title game with that resounding 17-7 victory over No. 4 Robert Morris.
In today's championship tile, the Bulldogs built an early 5-1 lead before the Seahawks responded with a 4-2 run over the final 12:32 of the first half, including a 3-1 spree in the final 5:50 to head into intermission trailing by just a 7-5 count.
A Pastore free-position shot at 12:32 broke a 21:26 scoreless drought for Wagner which made it a 5-2 game. After Sniffen scored at 10:02 to push the Bulldog lead to 6-2, consecutive unassisted tallies by Pastore and Tumolo, at 5:50 and 4:17, respectively, drew the Seahawks to within 6-4.
A Descalzo goal off of a Lisa Vendel assist at 2:56 made it 7-4 before Fay buried a shot off a Pastore assist to make it a 7-5 game at halftime.
The Bulldogs quelled Wagner's momentum, however, by scoring the first two goals of the second half in building a 9-5 lead. Wagner made it a 9-6 game on Tumolo's third goal of the game, which came on a free-position shot at the 22:33 mark. This would be the Seahawks' final score of the game as Bryant outscored the Seahawks 5-0 over the final 19:05 en route the 14-6 win.
Bryant outshot Wagner 25-15, led in groundballs 21-13, and held a 21-15 edge in draw controls. The Bulldogs committed 20 turnovers while Wagner turned the ball over 18 times. Bryant was successful on 2-of-7 free-position shots while Wagner was 3-of-5.
