Wagner Splits With Mount St. Mary's In Saturday Doubleheader

Emmitsburg, MD – The Wagner softball team split a pair of games against Northeast Conference (NEC) opponent Mount St. Mary's, first dropping a 2-1 decision to The Mount before besting the home team 3-1 in eight innings.

The Seahawks are now 17-21 on the season, and 4-6 in NEC play. Mount St. Mary's is now 19-17-1 on the season and 7-3 in NEC play.

In game one, Wagner had eight hits as a club, all from different batters.

In the circle, McKaleigh Goodale (Bradenton, FL / Lakewood Ranch) pitched a complete game, striking out two, walking two, and allowing six hits and one earned run.

The Mount got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning, plating one runner on an error by the Seahawk offense to take a 1-0 lead.

Wagner had one runner in scoring position in the top of the third inning, yet failed to push her across before The Mount earned the third out.

Mount St. Mary's threatened to tack on another run to its total in its frame of the third with a runner on third base, but Goodale fanned a batter before inducing back-to-back ground outs to end the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, The Mount recorded a single run to increase their lead to 2-0.

The Seahawks got one back in the top of the fifth to make it 2-1. Brianna Tredway (Downingtown, PA / Downingtown West) opened the frame with a single through the left side. Classmate Taylor Beeson (Mesa, AZ / Red Mountain) followed with a base hit, and both runners advanced to third and second base, respectively, on a sacrifice bunt laid down by junior Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA / Lynnwood).

One out later, Brenda Bott (Fountain Valley, CA / Fountain Valley) pushed across Tredway with a hit up the middle for Wagner's only run of the game.

In game two, Samantha Bedker (Phoenix, AZ / Sandra Day O'Connor) hurled all 8.0 innings, striking out three, walking two, and allowing eight hits. Bedker improves to 8-7 on the season.

As a club, Wagner had ten hits from six different batters.

The Seahawks claimed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Junior Beth Lewis (Ashburn, VA / Stone Bridge) led off the inning with a double down the right field line. One out later, senior Hayley Sullivan (Bakersfield, CA / North) hit a powerful shot down the left field line for an RBI double.

The Green & White loaded the bases in the same inning, yet would be unable to plate additional runs before the end of their at-bat.

The Mount threatened big in their frame of the third, loading the bases with one out. Bedker pitched the Seahawks out of a huge jam, however, striking out one before inducing a pop up for the third out.

Unfortunately, Mount St. Mary's equaled the lone Seahawk run in the bottom of the fourth inning with a home run to make it 1-1.

With neither team able to register a run after the fourth, the game would enter eight innings.

In the top of the eighth, Wagner broke through, earning two runs to take a 3-1 lead. Parker opened the frame with a single through the middle, and was driven home when Beasley followed with a home run over the right field fence. The dinger marked Beasley's eighth homer of the season.

Despite getting a pair on with one out, The Mount would not be able to answer, with Bedker inducing back-to-back pop ups to end the game.

The Seahawks return to action next Saturday, April 26, when they host a doubleheader against Robert Morris. Next Saturday also marks Senior Day, where MacKenzie Alfaro, Kristen Matteoni, Taylor Rauscher, and Hayley Sullivan will all be honored for their contributions to the Wagner softball program.
