Staten Island, NY - The Wagner softball team powered past Northeast Conference (NEC) foe Sacred Heart in both games of a doubleheader this afternoon, first posting a nail-biting 2-1 victory before shutting out the Pioneers for a 4-0 win.
The Seahawks improve to 16-20 on the season and 3-5 in conference play, while the Pioneers are now 12-19 on the season and 1-9 in conference play.
In game one, freshman
Brianna Tredway (Downingtown, PA / Downingtown West) led Wagner's offensive attack, going three-for-four at the plate, with one RBI and one run scored.
Sophomore
Abigail Beasley (Peoria, AZ / Centennial) also provided a notable effort, going one-for-two, with one RBI.
Freshman pitcher
McKaleigh Goodale (Brandenton, FL / Lakewood Ranch) (8-7) tossed a complete game, allowing four hits, walking two, and not allowing any earned runs.
As a club, Wagner had seven hits.
Sacred Heart earned its only run in the top of the second inning, pushing across one unearned run to take the early lead.
The Seahawks tied the game in the bottom of the third inning. Tredway reached first on a single to left-centerfield, and advanced to second on a
Kelsey Parker (Lynnwood, WA / Lynnwood) single to left field. Beasley then plated Tredway, knocking a base hit through the right side.
The Pioneers looked to take the lead in the top of the seventh inning, getting a pair of runners on base. With two outs, Sacred Heart's Annie Dreher sent a deep shot to centerfield. The Pioneers' hopes of adding a run to their total were quickly dashed, however, when Tredway tracked the ball all the way back and, despite crashing into the fence, held onto the ball for the third out.
In the bottom of the seventh, Wagner earned the go-ahead run when Tredway's double to left field plated pinch-runner Haley Sullivan (Bakersfield, CA / North), effectively securing a 2-1 victory.
In game two,
Samantha Bedker (Phoenix, AZ / Sandra Day O'Connor) hurled a complete game, holding the Pioneers to a single hit, walking two, and fanning three.
As a club, Wagner had eight hits from seven different batters.
The Seahawk offense was highlighted by a handful of batters. Parker went one-for-three at the plate, with two RBI, while
Brenda Bott (Fountain Valley, CA / Fountain Valley) went two-for-three with one RBI and one run scored. Freshman third baseman
Aerika High (Manheim, PA / Manheim Central) was one-for-one, with one RBI and one run scored.
Wagner broke open the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Beasley led off the inning with a double to left field. Bott followed with a single through the middle to plate Beasley and give Wagner a 1-0 advantage.
Beth Lewis (Ashburn, VA / Stone Bridge) and
Hana Gilbert (Valley Center, CA / Valley Center) both singled to load the bases. High then pushed Bott across with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
The Seahawks added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. High got things going for Wagner, singling up the middle.
Taylor Rauscher (Peoria, AZ / Sunrise Mountain) followed with a single through the 5-6 spot, and both runners advanced to third and second base, respectively, on a sacrifice bunt laid down by Tredway.
With two outs, Parker hit the ball up the middle to drive home Rauscher and High and make it 4-0.
Sacred Heart had an opportunity to put a dent in Wagner's lead in the top of the sixth inning, but stranded a pair of runners.
The Green & White return to action tomorrow, Saturday, April 19, when they travel to Emmitsburg, MD to face NEC opponent Mount St. Mary's. The first game of the doubleheader is slated for a 12:00 pm start.
